Long Beach State Takes Down Hawaii In 3-0 Sweep

9/29/2023 10:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

The Beach defeat the Rainbow Wahine for the first time since 2016 with a 3-0 victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team came into the Walter Pyramid and defeated Big West preseason favorite Hawaii in straight sets 25-22, 26-24, 25-21 in front of an electric crowd of 3,137 fans on Friday night.

The victory for the Beach (9-5, 3-1 Big West) snapped an 11-match losing streak to the Rainbow Wahine (9-5, 2-1 Big West) which dated back to 2016. Even more impressive, the sweep was the first such victory for Long Beach over Hawaii since November 1, 1997.

The Beach were solid on all sides of the ball as they battled the Bows through three competitive sets which saw 20 ties and nine lead changes. Long Beach State did an excellent job gritting out a tough set two that went into overtime and required LBSU to fight off a Hawaii set point and come back to win 26-24.

Redshirt junior outside hitter Abby Karich led the Beach with 13 kills on a .235 clip, while also posting five digs and four blocks. Natalie Glenn reached double-figures for the fifth-straight match as she finished with 11 kills on a .222 attack percentage, while adding five digs, three blocks, and three aces.

Setter Zayna Meyer was on-point as she paced the Beach with 32 assists. Meyer turned in another balanced performance as she contributed seven digs, two kills, and a block.

Libero Savana Chacon anchored the defense with 13 digs as she extended her double-figure dig streak to seven. On the year, she has logged 10 or more digs on 13 separate occasions. Defensive specialists Nicole Hoff and Jenna Giambi also contributed in the back court with nine and five digs, respectively. The trio did an excellent job throughout the match making key saves to keep rallies going for the Beach.

Junior middle blocker Kameron Bacon tied Karich for the team lead with four blocks on the night. Bacon also added six kills on a .250 attack percentage, to go along with two digs.

Hawaii opened the match with a quick 5-1 lead as Long Beach State took a timeout. Despite falling behind early, the Beach did a solid job battling back as they evened the score at 7-all on a block assist by Meyer and freshman middle blocker Ella Lomigora. From there, the set went back and forth until LBSU used a 4-0 run to take a 20-17 advantage over the Bows. Hawaii cut Long Beach's lead down to one (21-20), but the Beach used a timeout to regroup before coming out and winning the first set, 25-22.

The Beach jumped out in front of Hawaii, 2-0, to start the second set, but the lead was short-lived. Hawaii used a 4-0 run to go up 8-5, before tallying three-straight points to take a 12-8 advantage. Long Beach State utilized a timeout after finding themselves down by five (15-10). The break in action did the Beach good as they came out and rattled off four-straight points highlighted by a pair of aces from Glenn to pull within one (15-14). Back-to-back kills from Karich gave LBSU a 19-18 lead as UH called for a timeout. The Beach pushed their lead to 23-21, but the Bows would not go away. Hawaii scored three-consecutive points to send it to set point, 24-23. Long Beach State got a huge kill from Katie Kennedy to even the score at 24-all. Kennedy's kill kicked off a 3-0 run for the Beach as they went on to win 26-24.

Leading 2-0 and running on the momentum from the exciting overtime win in the second set, Long Beach State opened the third set on a 4-0 run. Another 4-0 run with kills from Glenn and Meyer, followed by an ace from Glenn and a block assist by Elise Agi and Kennedy, gave LBSU a seven-point advantage (10-3). Despite the deficit, Hawaii fought back and scored four-straight points of their own to make it a three-point game (10-7). UH then took its first lead of the set, 14-13, after tallying three-consecutive points. The conference foes fought each other over the next few points. Another key kill from Kennedy evened the game at 17-all and jump started another 3-0 Beach run that would give Long Beach State a 19-17 lead that it would not relinquish. The Beach held the edge over the Bows the rest of the way and won, 25-21, after a block assist by Glenn and Bacon.

Hawaii was limited to a .157 attack percentage in the match, marking their third-lowest output of the season. Only Amber Igiede reached double-figure kills for the Bows as she finished with 13 kills on a .286 hitting percentage. She also added five digs, three blocks, one assists, and the lone service ace for Hawaii. Kate Lang recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs, while libero Talia Edmonds logged nine digs. Kennedi Evans led the blocking defense with eight blocks (1 solo, 7 assists), while also contributing four kills on a .375 clip (4-1-8).

Long Beach State will take on Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN on the road in their next action. The Beach will play the Roadrunners on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Bakersfield, Calif., before facing the Matadors on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. in Northridge. Both matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
