Elise Agi, Natalie Glenn Reach Career-Highs In 3-2 Win At Cal State Bakersfield

Agi pounded out a career-best 28 kills, while Glenn tallied a career-high six aces in the victory
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Elise Agi and Natalie Glenn lifted Long Beach State to an exciting 3-2 [23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 15-9] victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night at the Icardo Center.
With the win, Long Beach State improves to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in Big West action as they have now won seven of their last eight matches. Cal State Bakersfield, meanwhile, drops to 5-12 on the year and 1-4 in league play.
The Beach hit a hot .349 on the night as redshirt sophomore Zayna Meyer distributed 50 assists helping Agi reach her career-high 28 kills. Agi hit .431 in the match to lead the Beach, while also contributing seven digs and two aces.
Junior Abby Karich chipped in 14 kills of her own on a .242 clip, while Katie Kennedy was very efficient as she knocked down eight kills on 20 swings to hit .400.
Glenn also recorded eight kills, while adding 10 digs, and a career-high six aces. She is now tied for fifth all-time at Long Beach State in a single match.
The defense was led by junior libero Savana Chacon who logged 16 digs in the back row. In addition to Chacon and Glenn reaching double-figure digs, Meyer did so as well with 12 on the way to recording her eighth double-double of the season. She also added a team-best three blocks on the night.
The Beach got off to a slow start as Cal State Bakersfield took a quick 3-0 lead. After the Roadrunners tallied four-straight points to go up, 9-4, LBSU called a timeout to regroup. Long Beach chipped away and evened the score at 16-all on a kill from Agi, which forced the Runners to call for a timeout. From there, Glenn put LBSU up 21-19 forcing Bakersfield to utilize their final timeout. The Roadrunners came to tie the game, 22-22, before winning 25-23 to take the first set.
The second set saw both team trade points back and forth early on. The Beach went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by an ace from Agi to give them a 19-16 lead. Although Bakersfield evened the score at 20-all, Long Beach State would not be stopped. The Beach closed the second set with three-straight points to win 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.
Long Beach State took control of the third set from the start. The Beach opened the frame going up 9-1. LBSU led the entire third set as they hit .684 and led by as many as 10 points on several occasions, before winning, 25-15, to take a 2-1 set lead.
Cal State Bakersfield went up early in the fourth set, but the Beach battled back. Long Beach State rattled off three-straight points to cut the Roadrunners lead down to two (23-21), before pulling within in one (24-23). Despite their efforts, the Beach were unable to come any close, dropping the fourth set, 25-23.
The fifth set began close, but Long Beach State strung together a couple 3-0 runs to take a 10-7 lead over the Runners. The Beach got a solid run going when Glenn went back to serve as she led the Beach to a 12-8 advantage with an ace. Long Beach continued to pull away and Agi put the game away with a kill to end it, 15-9.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m., when they travel to Northridge, Calif., to face CSUN. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
