Long Beach State Falls On The Road To CSUN, 3-2

Elise Agi and Zayna Meyer record double-double in the road loss
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State battled, but ultimately fell, 3-2 [25-16, 21-25, 23, 25, 25-9, 11-15], to CSUN at Premier Credit Union Arena on Saturday.
Despite outhitting the Matadors (3-14, 1-5 Big West), .252 to .259, the Beach (10-6, 4-2 Big West) were unable to come away with the win. LBSU led CSUN in kills (58-42), assists (54-41), aces (12-8), digs (52-40), and blocks (14.0-9.0), but dropped three close sets on the road.
Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer paced the Beach with 44 assists and 11 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season. She also contributed three kills, three blocks, and a pair of aces.
Meyer distributed the ball well and got three hitters in double figures. Leading the way for the Beach offensively was Elise Agi who finished the match with 14 kills, 14 digs, and four aces.
Coming in just behind Agi was Natalie Glenn who totaled 13 kills on a .391 attack percentage. She also added seven digs, five aces, and four blocks. Glenn was excellent from the service line as she finished the weekend with 11 total service aces to average 1.10 aces per set.
Rounding out LBSU's double-figure scorers was Katie Kennedy who logged 12 kills on an impressive .556 attack percentage. She put up six blocks, while adding two digs, and one assist, in an all-around-solid performance.
On the defensive end, Kameron Bacon tied her career-high with eight total blocks (3 solo, 5 assists), while also recording six kills, and one dig.
The Beach controlled the first set early as they took a 10-4 lead after an ace from Agi. Long Beach State opened up a 10-point lead (21-11) after tallying six-straight points, highlighted by another ace from Agi. From there, LBSU closed it out, winning the first set, 25-16.
CSUN seemed to find its groove in the second set. The Matadors took a 7-4 lead, as LBSU called a timeout. The Beach came out of the break and evened the score at 8-all, but CSUN would score seven-straight points to jump out in front, 15-8. Despite Long Beach's efforts, they were unable to catch up as they dropped the second set, 25-21.
The third set was a battle to start. Both teams traded points early on, and the Matadors held a 15-14 edge a the media timeout. CSUN came out of the break in action and extended their lead up to four (19-15). Although LBSU managed to make it a one-point game (19-18), CSUN surged ahead once again (23-18). The Beach refused to quit as they went on a 4-0 run cutting the Matadors' lead down to one (24-23). But CSUN managed to put away the set, winning 25-23, and taking a 2-1 set lead over Long Beach State.
LBSU owned the fourth set as the Beach hit .500 (13-3-20), while forcing the Matadors into a negative attack percentage (-.190). Long Beach State used a 7-0 run to jump out in front 11-3 over CSUN after an ace from Agi. The Beach extended their lead to double digits after a kill from Bacon (16-6) forced the Matadors into a timeout. From there, the Beach cruised to a convincing 25-9 victory, forcing a fifth set.
The fifth set saw the conference foes exchange points early on. Long Beach State held an 8-7 advantage at the side switch, but that would be the last lead they'd hold. CSUN, now playing on their designated home side of the court, rattled off five-consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead over the Beach. Despite calling two timeouts during that run, LBSU was unable to stop the Matadors as they went on to win, 15-11,

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track next week when they host UC Davis and UC Riverside at the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. Both matches will start at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
