Beach Offense Leads Long Beach State To Sweep Of UC Davis

Long Beach State hit .404 in straight set victory over UC Davis, as Katie Kennedy and Zayna Meyer both hit over .700 in the contest
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's offense was on fire on Friday night as the Beach hit .404 marking their highest output in Big West action this season on the way to sweeping UC Davis, 3-0 [25-10, 25-19, 25-20] at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (11-6, 5-2 Big West) led the Aggies (9-8, 4-3 Big West) in every statistical category tonight. Long Beach outhit UC Davis .404 to .112, while posting 48 kills to the Aggies' 28. LBSU also led UC Davis in assists (44-25), aces (6-4), digs (38-35), and blocking (8.0-4.0).
Redshirt sophomore Zayna Meyer was on-point for the Beach as she ran a balanced offense spreading the ball around evenly to each of her hitters. She would finish the match with 35 assists and 10 digs to secure her 10th double-double of the season. In addition, Meyer took several swings herself and knocked down seven kills on 10 errorless attempts to hit .700 in the contest.
She wasn't the only Beach player hitting over .700. Middle blocker Katie Kennedy was on fire as she led Long Beach State with 11 kills, while hitting a career-high .714 (11-1-14). She also added three blocks, and two digs in the match.
Both middles were efficient, as Kameron Bacon led the Beach at the net with five blocks, while also contributed on the offensive attack. The product out of Fontana, Calif., knocked down nine kills on 14 errorless swings as she hit a season-best .643.
Junior outside hitter Abby Karich also finished with nine kills, while Elise Agi added seven kills to add to the offense's production.
Long Beach State took control over UC Davis early as the Beach hit .557 (15-0-27) in the first set. LBSU used a 9-0 run to open up a 12-3 advantage over the Aggies. From there, the Beach used another impressive run (7-0) to extend their lead to 15 (19-4). LBSU owned a 72% sideout percentage in the frame as they rolled to a 25-10 victory.
The Beach went on a 6-0 run in the second set to take a 12-7 lead, as UC Davis quickly called a timeout. The Aggies managed to cut the Beach's lead down to three (14-11), before making it a one-point game (17-16). Long Beach State took a timeout and regrouped, going back up by four (20-16) on back-to-back kills from Bacon. The Beach would close out the set with three-straight points as Natalie Glenn served up an ace sandwiched between kills from Agi and Kennedy to give Long Beach a 25-19 victory.
The third and final set saw Long Beach State take an early 6-1 lead over UC Davis. The Aggies took a timeout and managed to come back and even the score at 11-all. But, back-to-back kills from Kennedy gave LBSU a lead it would not relinquish, 16-13. From there, the Beach kept the Aggies at bay and cruised to a 25-20 win to complete the sweep.
UC Davis' Jade Light led the Aggies with six kills, while setter Mia Starr dished out 13 assists. Olivia Utterback led the team with 13 digs, to go along with five kills, two blocks, one assist, and one ace.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m., when they host UC Riverside at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
