Long Beach State hit .381 in the match and put up 11.0 total team blocks to cruise to a straight-set victory over UCR

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team turned in a balanced performance on Saturday night as the Beach swept UC Riverside, 3-0 [25-17, 25-17, 25-14] at the Walter Pyramid.

With the win, Long Beach State (12-6, 6-2 Big West) has now won five of their last six matches and is on a 4-0 home winning streak. UC Riverside (4-16, 3-5 Big West), meanwhile, is on a four-match losing streak.

The Beach were solid on all sides of the ball tonight. LBSU hit .381 and put up 11.0 total team blocks. The Long Beach State defense forced UCR into a negative attack percentage (-.042) on the night, while also holding the Highlanders to just 2.0 total team blocks and 16 kills in the match.

Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer was incredible for the Beach as she piloted the team to another efficient night. She distributed the ball and got six hitters to score five or more kills on the night, including herself. Meyer finished the match with 28 assists, six kills, four digs, and three blocks, all while hitting .750 (6-0-8).

Natalie Glenn led the Beach offensively with 10 kills on a .556 attack percentage (10-0-18). She also contributed four digs, three blocks, an ace, and an assist.



Elise Agi finished the match with eight kills, while Abby Karich and Kameron Bacon each recorded six kills for the Beach.

Karich also had a strong offensive night as she hit .455, knocking down six kills on 11 swings, while committing just one error.

Defensively, Bacon led the way with seven blocks (1 solo, 6 assists) and junior libero Savana Chacon anchored the backrow with 11 digs.

Long Beach State controlled the match early. The Beach used a 6-0 run in the first set to open up a 13-7 lead over the Highlanders. Later, LBSU tallied four-straight points to go up by eight (18-10). The Beach hit .355 (13-2-31) in the frame and cruised to a 25-17 win.

In the second set, LBSU hit .414 (15-3-29) and after two early ties, jumped out in front 7-2. By the media timeout, Long Beach State held a 15-8 advantage over the Highlanders. UC Riverside used a 4-0 run of its own to make it a three-point game (17-14). But, the Beach would close the set with six-straight points, highlighted by an ace from Chacon, to win 25-17.

The third set began as a back-and-forth contest, but the Beach turned things around after scoring three-straight points to make it 9-8. Tia Chavira came in off the bench and gave the Beach a boost as she led the squad on a 3-0 run, highlighted by an ace, to give LBSU a 14-12 lead. That seemed to give Long Beach State the jumpstart it needed as the Beach went on a 10-0 run to end the set and match, 25-14.



UC Riverside was led by Mylei Vargas-Deason who finished with six kills, three digs, two assists, and one ace. Beatriz Silva dished out 10 assists to go along with five digs, two aces, and one block, while libero Jessica Dean logged eight digs, while contributing two assists, and a pair of aces.

Long Beach State will be back in action next week when they take on UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
