Katie Kennedy led the way with 12 kills on a .688 attack percentage, while putting up a team-best five blocks in the match
IRVINE, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team hit .345 on their way to their third-straight sweep as the Beach downed UC Irvine, 3-0 [25-21, 25-20, 25-17] at the Bren Events Center on Thursday night.
The Beach (13-6, 7-2 Big West) hit over .275 in each set as they controlled most of the match over the Anteaters (6-14, 4-5 Big West). In addition to hitting .345, the Beach heled the 'Eaters to a .179 attack percentage, while also leading UCI in kills (47-31), assists (45-29), aces (8-3), and blocks (7.5-3.0).
Middle blocker Katie Kennedy was unstoppable as she led Long Beach State with 12 kills on a .688 attack percentage (12-1-16). She was hot on both sides of the ball as she also led the team with five blocks, while contributing two digs and one ace in the match.
Also recording double-figure kills was outside hitter Elise Agi who finished the match 10 kills, while hitting .300 (10-1-30), to go along with seven digs, four aces, one assist, and one block.
Redshirt sophomore Zayna Meyer set a solid game as she distributed 35 assists evenly amongst her hitters. She narrowly missed a double-double as she finished the match with nine digs, while adding three kills and two aces.
In addition to Kennedy and Agi's outstanding offensive efforts, Abby Karich and Natalie Glenn each contributed eight kills. Karich added four blocks, three digs, and ace, while Glenn chipped in two blocks and a dig on the night.
While the offense soared, the Long Beach State defense was also on-point as they kept UC Irvine off balance all night. Leading the defensive effort for the Beach was defensive specialist Jenna Giambi who tied for the team lead with nine digs. Libero Savana Chacon was also efficient, logging seven digs in the match.
The match started out close, as both teams traded points early on. However, a 4-0 Long Beach State run, which was jumpstarted on a kill from Kennedy, led the Beach to a 13-9 lead. From there, the Beach held a five-point advantage (15-10) at the media timeout. Following the break in action, LBSU extended its lead to six (18-12) before sending it to set point, 24-18. Despite UCI's 3-0 run, the Beach regrouped during a timeout and came out swinging as Kameron Bacon knocked down a kill to win the set, 25-21.
The second set was much like the first. The game began close, but Long Beach State pulled away after scoring five-straight points (9-5). An ace by Agi gave LBSU a 15-10 lead heading into the media timeout. Although UC Irvine would cut the Beach's lead down to one (18-17), Long Beach never let the 'Eaters come any closer. The Beach scored three-straight points to send it to set point, before winning, 25-20, on a kill from Karich.
Leading 2-0, Long Beach State continued to surge into the third set. The Beach took a quick 5-2 lead over the Anteaters to start. LBSU rattled off five-straight points to take an eight-point advantage (13-5) over the 'Eaters. From there, the Beach held a comfortable lead over UCI, as they cruised to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.
Each of UC Irvine's hitters were held to single digit kills. Isabela Scarlett led the team with nine kills on a .300 clip (9-3-20). Nicole Feliciano finished with a double-double (17 assists, 10 digs), while libero Campbell Jensen anchored the backrow with 12 digs.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
