Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball Drops a 3-1 Battle to UC Santa Barbara

9/23/2023 10:39:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Zayna Meyer and Elise Agi finish the match with double-doubles in LBSU’s loss

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A Big West battle between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid, ended with the Gauchos holding off the Beach, 3-1 [23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25].

The closely contested match saw the Gauchos (12-2, 2-0 Big West) out-hit the Beach (7-5, 1-1 Big West) .208 to .139. UCSB also out-blocked LBSU 14.0-10.0. However, Long Beach State recorded six aces to UC Santa Barbara's one.

Long Beach State was led by Zayna Meyer and Elise Agi who both registered double-doubles in the match. Meyer dished out 37 assists to go along with 14 digs on the night, while Agi posted 10 kills and 10 digs.

Junior outside hitter Natalie Glenn also recorded 10 kills, while hitting .241. She also chipped in eight digs, two blocks, and two aces.

The Beach defense turned in a strong performance as LBSU was led by junior libero Savana Chacon who logged 18 digs in the match. Chacon has now recorded double-figure digs in 11 of Long Beach's 12 matches and has led the team in digs on 10 occasions.

Chacon set the tone for the backrow leading a quartet of double-digit dig performers in Meyer (14), Jenna Giambi (12), and Agi (10).

The defense also shined at the net as the Beach put up 10.0 total team blocks. Abby Karich, Kameron Bacon, and Ella Lomigora each tallied five block assists to lead the way for Long Beach State at the net.

The opening set was a close one that saw the conference foes battle each other through 11 ties and five lead changes. The game could have gone either way as both teams matched each other point-for-point. UCSB managed to take the largest lead of the set on a 5-0 run that would give the Gauchos set point, 24-20. But the Beach weren't done fighting. LBSU used a 3-0 run to cut UCSB's lead down to one (24-23), before Santa Barbara took the first set, 25-23.

The Beach's best offensive set came in the second as Long Beach State knocked down 10 kills, while hitting .304. In addition to the offense gelling, the defense was also solid as they held the Gauchos to a .121 attack percentage in the frame. The game was close early on, but a 5-0 LBSU run, highlighted by a kill and an ace from Agi, gave the Beach a lead (10-7) it would not relinquish. Long Beach led the rest of the way and closed the game on a 5-0 run to win 25-17 and even the match at one set apiece.

The Gauchos opened the third set with a quick 6-1 lead as Long Beach State called an early timeout. From there, the Beach chipped way and evened the score at 8-all for a brand-new game. The set teetered back-and-forth until UC Santa Barbara scored three-straight points to take a 22-21 edge on their way to winning 25-23.

UC Santa Barbara kicked off the fourth set much like the third as they took an early 5-1 lead forcing a timeout from the Beach. However, the Beach were unable to whittle away at the lead and found themselves trailing the Gauchos, 20-15. Despite the deficit, Long Beach State would not go quietly. The Beach rattled off three-straight points, fighting off UCSB's multiple match points, to pull within one (24-20) as Santa Barbara called a timeout before ending the set and match on a block, 25-20.

Tasia Farmer turned in a strong performance for UC Santa Barbara as she hit .379 with 15 kills and seven blocks. Michelle Ohwobete led the Gauchos with 16 kills, while Grace McIntosh finished with a double-double (26 assists, 16 digs). Libero Macall Peed anchored the defense with 19 digs, while Andi Kreiling put up a team-best eight blocks.

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track when they host UC San Diego on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
