Long Beach State Closes Out Non-Conference Play With 5-1 Rout

9/17/2023 4:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Beach roared back with five goals including a brace from Cherrie Cox.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State returned to George Allen Field to host their final non-conference game and responded with a dominant performance in a 5-1 win over Northern Colorado.

Long Beach State (5-3-2) finished with 23 shots including 15 on target, including a 14-2 edge in the first half and holding a 63% possession rate on the game.

The Beach had the early possession and chances with two quick opportunities, but it was Northern Colorado (0-9-1) that grabbed the early lead. Playing on the counter, an unlucky miscue saw Alex Michael score her first goal of the season and give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

Cherrie Cox had a great opportunity just off target as Long Beach State continued to build pressure, and the Beach found the equalizer in the 33rd. Alia Sinoff won back possession in a dangerous spot, building to Ceja who found Cox in front of the keeper and the sophomore found the one-on-one finish to even the score at 1-1.

Cox grabbed her second minutes later after a Northern Colorado handball in the box led to a penalty, and the sophomore bagged her brace with the conversion, the first penalty shot and first make of the year for Long Beach State.

Out of the half, Long Beach State continued to push. Bella Ternero had a big opportunity turned away by Kaya Lindberg in a great save, who finished with 10 saves of her own. Zora Standifer, a halftime substitute in goal for LBSU had a big save of her own in the 53rd minute as Northern Colorado had another chance in transition.

A third goal for the Beach broke the game open. Off of a corner, Ternero found Julia Moore who extended the lead to 3-1 in the 56th minute. Cox and Elysia Laramie then combined on the counter for a skillful tap-in for the senior who danced around Lindberg to make it 4-1 in the 70th. The Beach then added their final goal minutes later in the 73rd, as Summer Laskey smashed home a corner kept in play by Laramie and Sara Ybarra.

The Beach will close out their current four-game homestand by returning to Big West action, hosting UC Santa Barbara at an adjusted time, starting at Noon on Sunday, September 24. Long Beach State has now gone unbeaten in five straight matches at George Allen Field.
