Late Winner From Laramie Sends Beach Past No. 22 Harvard

9/1/2023 10:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The senior scored Long Beach State’s third goal of the second half in the 88th minute in the 3-2 win.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a wild second half that saw the two teams explode for five total goals, it was Long Beach State that had the final edge as Elysia Laramie's 88th minute winner gave the Beach a 3-2 comeback win over No. 22 Harvard at George Allen Field.

Neither team found an early edge in the first half. Harvard (2-1-0) held the shot edge over Long Beach State (3-2-0) seven to four, but neither side had a clear-cut chance, with Zora Standifer making a pair of easy saves in the opening 45.

The action quickly ramped up in the second half, as Harvard's leading scorer Josefine Hasbo found herself in right place at the right time in the Long Beach State box to poke home the opener in the early minutes, giving the Crimson 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Long Beach State was able to quickly find an answer, as an entry into the offensive third from Brooklyn Antonucci found Julia Moore in space, and the sophomore calmly placed the finish into the net to even the score in the 52nd.

Minutes later, Long Beach State took the lead as a Harvard clearance drifted into the path of Makayla Demelo who lofted a perfectly weighted shot into the upper right to put Long Beach State in front 2-1 in the 57th minute.

Turning up the pressure, Harvard was able to answer in the 79th minute, as Olof Kristinsdottir was able to beat Standifer and even the score at 2-2.

Long Beach State would have the final word on the night however. Earning a pair of late corners, Antonucci was able to find Elysia Laramie for a towering header to find the corner of the goal and put the Beach on top 3-2 with just over two minutes remaining in the contest.

Antonucci's two assists moved the freshman into a tie for the team lead, while the late winner extended Laramie's team goal lead with her sixth of the campaign in just five games.

Long Beach State will head on the road Sunday, facing Fresno State for the ninth time. The Beach have won five straight against the Bulldogs. Sunday's game is scheduled to kick off at noon with live video coverage courtesy of the Mountain West Network.
