Freshmen, Defense Lead Long Beach State To 1-0 Win Over Fresno State

9/3/2023 2:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Long Beach State recorded their second straight shutout on the road in the victory.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State played 90 minutes of excellent defense, limiting Fresno State to just one solid chance at goal and got a boost from goal-scorer Jordan Candelaria to go on the road and defeat Fresno State 1-0.

For Long Beach State (4-2-0), the shutout was the second straight on the road, as junior goalkeeper Zora Standifer made six saves in total but was mostly untroubled on the day in front of a stout LBSU defense.

A typical example came in the opening minutes, as Megan Galvan was able to direct a shot on target, but directly at the junior keeper for the first of her six saves on Sunday against Fresno State (1-2-2).

In her return game against her former school, Kassandra Ceja had a close miss in the 13th minute, receiving the ball in the box and aiming for the far post but sliding the shot just inches wide, one of seven shots for the Beach in the first half.

The Beach broke the deadlock just before the half in the 40th minute. A pair of freshman substitutes, Julie Lopez and Jordan Candelaria were able to connect as an entry to the back post from Lopez hit the post and Candelaria tracking was able to tap the rebound home to put the Beach in front at the break.

In the second half, Candelaria looked to return the favor with a great cross for the first major chance in the second half, knocked away from Elysia Laramie at the last second in the 50th minute.

Playing with the lead, Long Beach State limited the Fresno State chances the rest of the way to complete their second road shutout of the season. The Bulldogs had their best chance in the 64th minute, getting a look at the middle of the field but junior Zora Standifer was able to get a touch to force the ball onto the crossbar where it was then quickly cleared by Maddy Perez.

With the win, Long Beach State remains unbeaten in Fresno and becomes the first Big West team to defeat the Bulldogs in four attempts this season. Fresno State had previously beaten CSU Bakersfield and tied both UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.

Long Beach State will have a tough road test facing the No. 1 team in the country, UCLA, in their next action on Thursday, September 7 before returning to George Allen Field, hosting Utah Valley at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 10 with live coverage on ESPN+.
