Ceja had one goal in each half as Long Beach State dropped the Aztecs on the road 3-0.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior Kassandra Ceja scored a pair of goals, one in each half as Long Beach State picked up their first road win of the season, heading to San Diego State and defeating the Aztecs 3-0.
Long Beach State (2-2-0) continued to show their offensive prowess, recording three or more goals in a game for the third time in four games this season. The Beach outshot the Aztecs 18 to 13, but more impressively had 10 shots on target on the night to just three for San Diego State (2-1-1)
The Beach forced Alexa Madueno into two early saves, while San Diego State two of their three shots on target in the first 15 minutes. Long Beach State would create a nice shot from Julia Moore which was saved by Madueno, but slowly the Beach continued to hold more possession while creating the more dangerous chances.
The breakthrough finally came from Makayla Demelo in transition, who was able to find Elysia Laramie streaking down the right, and the senior was able to turn the corner and fire in a cross to Ceja. The junior transfer scored her first goal for the Beach in the 25th minute to give the Beach a 1-0 lead which would hold to the half.
In the second half, Long Beach State was able to work a similar action freeing Laramie on the right side, but a sliding block in front of the centering pass kept the lead at one goal for the moment.
Minutes later, however, as the pressure continued to mount, Madueno misplayed a corner, punching the ball down into the ground and Ceja was able to clean up the opportunity, poking the ball home to grab her brace in her first start of the season.
Going for the hat trick just minutes later, Ceja had another good opportunity but this time Madueno was up to the challenge for the save. The Aztec keeper had two more saves in the final moments, but a giveaway led to a great lifted shot from Summer Laskey who slammed the door shut with Long Beach State's third goal of the game in the 87th minute.
Sunday's win continues a tradition of success for the Beach at San Diego State, where LBSU has gone unbeaten in nearly 15 years dating back to 2009.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field following a split in the team's first road trip of the year, hosting Harvard on Friday, September 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
