
Three Dirtbags Selected on Day Two of MLB Draft

Connor Burns, Jonathon Long, and Graham Osman had their names called on the second day of the 2023 MLB Draft.
SEATTLE, Wash. – Long Beach State saw three Dirtbags selected in the MLB Draft on Monday afternoon. Connor Burns was selected in the fifth round, Jonathon Long went in the ninth round, and Graham Osman went in the tenth round to end the day.
The battery mates, Burns and Osman, were both selected by the Cincinnati Reds while Long was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.
Burns is coming off a career year at the plate for the Dirtbags where he slashed .307/.374/.608 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI. Behind the plate, he posted career highs in putouts and assists on his way to a .992 fielding percentage while also throwing out 15 of 32 would-be base stealers. His career year earned him ABCA All-West Region Second Team honors as well as an All-Big West First Team selection.
This past season, the Chino native became the first player in Big West history to earn multiple Defensive Player of the Year honors doing so in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023. He was also a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for catcher in both seasons along with being named a semifinalist for this year's Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award.
He becomes the third Cincinnati Reds draftee in program history and first since 1998.
Long ends his career as one of the top power hitters in program history. The corner infielder hit .315 with a 1.007 OPS in his final season at Long Beach State with a team-leading 69 hits, 18 doubles, 15 home runs, and 55 RBI. He earned an All-Big West Second Team selection this past year and an Honorable Mention in 2022.
For his career, he slashed .318/.408/.545 in his three seasons launching 26 home runs which ranks second most in program history while his .545 slug is sixth all-time. He also ranks tied for third in home runs in the single-season LBSU record books and ninth in single-season slugging percentage.
He is the eighth Long Beach player in program history to be selected by the Cubs.
Osman had a very dominant stretch in his lone season with the Dirtbags. The Arizona State transfer totaled 78.1 innings on the mound, pitching to a 4.60 ERA with 89 strikeouts. He totaled six quality starts on the year, including three scoreless outings of six-plus frames to go along with six outings of eight more strikeouts.
A Perfect Game midseason All-American owned a 1.54 ERA through his first seven starts claiming a pair of Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. In that stretch, he owned a 4-0 record and was holding opponents to a .182 batting average.
He joins his battery mate (Burns) as the first Reds draft selections since 1998.
The three selections extends Long Beach State's streak of having a draftee every year going back to 1987 and at least two in every draft since 1989. Monday's selections also goes as the most top ten round picks since the 2010 season and gives the Dirtbags a top ten round selection in 10 of the last 11 MLB Drafts.
