LA QUINTA, Calif. –
Long Beach State took an early lead in the 2023 Big West Men's Golf Championship and stayed on top of the leaderboard throughout all three rounds on their way to capturing their fourth Big West Title in program history. The Beach were led by No. 16 Ian Gilligan who finished in a three-way tie for first place, but earned the individual title after sinking a birdie in the sudden-death playoff on the 18th hole.

Gilligan finished the final round shooting a 71 for 1-under to secure a spot in the sudden-death playoff. The sophomore from Reno, Nev., turned in an outstanding performance on the par-4 18th hole as he chipped his way to the green, then sunk a 20-foot shot to win the playoff. Gilligan is LBSU's first induvial champion since Brett Lederer won in 2008. The Beach have now had nine Big West Individual Champions dating back to 1972.

As a team, the Beach shot 281 in the final round to match their first round score as they finished 12-under par and two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Cal State Fullerton. Overall, all five Long Beach State players finished in the Top 25.

Gilligan led the way shooting a 69-71-71 for a 5-under par performance of 211. Coming in right behind him was senior Isaac Rodea who finished with a 4-under par showing after firing a 69-71-72 for a 212 as he tied for fourth place.

Freshman Jack Cantlay moved up three spots to finish in a tie for 12th place after shooting 1-over par for the tournament. After a rough second round, Cantlay rebounded nicely shooting a 70 for 2-under par in the final round.

Rookie Jaden Huggins shot a 71 for 1-under in the final round on his way to finishing 2-over for the tournament. Meanwhile, Steven Deutsch tied his season-low with a 69 on the last day to wrap up The Big West Championships with a 6-over par showing.

The top five finishers earned All-Tournament Team honors as Gilligan and Rodea represented the Beach, while Baron Szeto (Cal Poly), Russell Howlett (Cal State Fullerton), and Felix Schrott (CSUN) rounded out the squad.

With the tournament win, Long Beach State punched its ticket to the NCAA Regionals. Selections will be announced on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
