Shannon Haddad and Alana Vawter went pitch-for-pitch but the Cardinal scored the lone run in the first game of the postseason for the Beach.
STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Shannon Haddad was spectacular again on Friday, holding No. 6 Stanford to only three hits with no walks, but the Cardinal came away with the game's only run to grab a 1-0 win over Long Beach State in the NCAA postseason.
Long Beach State (31-22) had the better of the early innings. Sara Olson reach on an error in the top of the first inning, and in the second, the Beach had runners in scoring position again. Lilyanna Martinez was plunked, and Cam Cecil beat out an infield single to put two on, but they were left on first and second as Alana Vawter escaped the jam for Stanford (41-13).
Both Vawter and Haddad were in total command through the early portion of the game. Neither pitcher walked a batter and both had just three hits on the day in a commanding performance from the circle.
Long Beach State's scoreless streak, going back two games, was finally broken in the sixth inning after 20 innings. Kaitlyn Lim singled for her second hit of the day, and an RBI double from Aly Kaneshiro, just the third hit of the day for the Cardinal broke the deadlock.
Long Beach State will now enter into an elimination game, facing Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. With a win, the team's postseason journey would immediately continue against the loser of the first game of the day between No. 6 Stanford and No. 20 Florida. All three games from Stanford Saturday will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
