UC San Diego Bests Long Beach State In Pitchers’ Duel To Open Series

Jada Cecil held Long Beach State to one hit in the defeat.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jada Cecil and Shannon Haddad went pitch-for-pitch through five innings, but UC San Diego broke through in the sixth inning to break the deadlock and go on to win 2-0.
Shannon Haddad struck out seven over six innings, working around traffic but coming up with the answer over the early innings for Long Beach State (17-17, 7-3 Big West). Meanwhile for UC San Diego (15-20, 5-5 Big West), Jada Cecil was outstanding, striking out five with no walks and allowing one hit on the night.
The Beach put runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but couldn't cash in the runs and the Tritons finally made the Beach pay in the sixth. Bobbi Aguirre beat out a bunt single in a bang-bang play to start the rally with one out, and back-to-back outs loaded the bases. The Beach picked up the second out on a force at home, but a wild pitch allowed the first run of the game to come home.
UC San Diego added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double from Keila Bosinger. Cecil then finished off the shutout to close out the win for the Tritons.
The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Tritons. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with both games shown live on ESPN+.
