Shannon Haddad, Sophia Fernandez both pitched complete games to lead the Beach from the circle.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State manufactured more than enough support for two stellar pitching performances, opening the Cal Poly series with a pair of wins over the Mustangs on Saturday.
Long Beach State (23-19, 13-4 Big West) turned to sophomore Shannon Haddad in the opening game, who limited Cal Poly to just one hit on the way to a 5-1 victory.
Jacquelyn Bickar was the catalyst for the Beach who put four runs on the board in the second inning to support Haddad. Bickar smashed a leadoff triple to start the inning, and quickly scored on a single from Lilyanna Martinez. Quickly loading the bases, the Beach was able to plate two with a sacrifice fly and a groundout, and then an RBI single from Cam Cecil gave the Beach a 4-0 lead.
Bickar sparked another rally in the fifth. Working a leadoff walk, Martinez followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and then the Beach worked a textbook double steal, with Bickar coming home for the team's fifth and final run in the opening game.
Cal Poly (14-18, 7-9 Big West) picked up their only run of the day in the third, taking advantage of two walks to start the inning to bring home a run on an RBI groundout. Haddad finished with three strikeouts while picking up her 10th win of the season in her 11th complete game.
Sophia Fernandez set down the Mustangs in order in the first inning of game two, and Long Beach State quickly jumped out to a lead in the bottom half. Back-to-back singles from Sara Olson and Cecil put two on before a walk to Bickar loaded the bases with no outs. Cal Poly grabbed a key out with a force out at the plate, but a sac fly from Fernandez and a single from Teah Thies brought home two runs which was more than enough support for Fernandez.
Fernandez scattered three hits over seven innings while inducing weak contact throughout the day, giving up no walks and seeing just four base-runners on the way to completing the first shutout of the season for the junior.
The Beach will look to complete the sweep at home on Sunday, when the series concludes with the final game starting at 1 p.m. Live coverage will be provided on ESPN+.
