The Bruins took down the Beach in five innings at the LBSU Softball Complex on Wednesday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of a standing-room only crowd of 772 on Wednesday night, Long Beach State was competitive early with No. 2 UCLA, but the Bruins put the pressure on the Beach and pulled away for a 10-0 win.
Long Beach State (21-19) had a strong first inning, as the Beach set down No. 2 UCLA (40-4) in order and had the first base-runner of the game as Makayla Medellin reached on an error in the first inning.
UCLA took the lead in the second inning as Sharlize Palacios hit a solo home run, but Haddad set down the next three in order to keep the Beach in striking distance through two innings.
The Bruins took advantage of two bunt singles in the third inning to kick start a rally, ultimately scoring a pair on two sacrifice flies and taking a 4-0 lead through three. A leadoff walk would again allow the Bruins to push across a pair in the fourth, and in the fifth, the Bruins capitalized on LBSU errors to break open the game and push past the run-rule mark.
Emily Salazar broke up the no-hitter of Taylor Tinsley in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Tinsley closed out the shutout with a pair of strikeouts to finish off the day in five.
Long Beach State returns to the LBSU Softball Complex for a three-game Big West series this weekend, hosting Cal Poly. The Beach will have a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, before closing the series Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
