A freshman, Leovao set a program record with a 6-under 66, the lowest round ever for the Beach at the Big West Championship.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Freshman Jasmine Leovao's spectacular first round highlighted the first day of action for Long Beach State at The Big West Championship, as Leovao finished the first round with a score of 66, leading the field at the culminating event of the Big West season.
Leovao had seven birdies with just one bogey in her first round at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas. That mark was just one of two rounds under par on the day, and saw the freshman from Oceanside, Calif. Take a four-stroke lead into the second day of competition on Monday.
Additionally, the 66 was the best score in program history at the Big West Championship, one stroke lower than the previous best of 67 shot by Monica Villareal in the 2011 championship.
As a team, Long Beach State finished the opening day in a tie for third place overall with Cal State Fullerton. Cal Poly leads the team competition with a +4 292, two strokes in front of UC Riverside and five ahead of the Beach and the Titans.
Hannah Ko had another consistent day for the Beach, finishing three-over par with a 75 to end the day in a tie for 14th place overall, the second-best score on the day for the Beach.
Sophomore Kristina Ponomareva had a solid day as well, birdieing the first hole of the day on the way to a 77, while Janae Leovao has the final counting score of the day for the Beach with a 79. A triple-bogey on 16 led to an 80 for Angelina Kim as the dropped score on Sunday for LBSU.
The second round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. PT, with live coverage from Golfstat found at https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=teamPlayer&tid=27419.
