Long Beach State grabs first run-rule win of the season.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Long Beach State piled up 12 hits in five innings, racing off to a fast start to close out a series win, 9-0 in five innings on the road at UC Santa Barbara. Mikayla Ceballos had five RBI with a triple and a double, while Makayla Medellin also had two hits with three RBI to pace the offense in a fantastic day for the Beach.
Long Beach State (21-18, 11-4 Big West) got the action started immediately in the top of the first. Sara Olson kicked off the game with a single, and after taking second, scored on an RBI single from Makayla Medellin. The rally continued as the Beach loaded the bases, and junior Mikayla Ceballos cleared them with a three-run triple to quickly give the Beach a 4-0 lead over UC Santa Barbara (23-13, 10-5 Big West)
After a quick second, the Beach went back to work in the third. Teah Thies started the inning with a single, and after a walk to Jacquelyn Bickar, Ceballos came to the plate and delivered again, this time with a two-run double to make the score 6-0.
Another leadoff hit helped the Beach add to their lead in the fourth. Olson and Cam Cecil hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Medellin doubled to bring home two more for LBSU. Lilyanna Martinez singled to score the freshman and the Beach led 9-0 after four innings.
Shannon Haddad was sparkling again in the circle for Long Beach State, surrendering one hit over four innings with four strikeouts, before turning things over to Sophia Fernandez for the fifth and final inning.
Long Beach State will return to the LBSU Softball Complex with a busy week, with four games on ESPN+. First, on Wednesday, Long Beach State will welcome No. 2 UCLA with a 6 p.m. first pitch under the lights, and then will host Cal Poly for a three-game series over the weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
