EWA BEACH, Hawaii – Angelina Kim won a two-hole playoff against teammate Hannah Ko as the pair finished 54 rounds tied for first place at the 2023 Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Kim finished the tournament 2-over par with a final score of 218.
Kim, who was the tournament's leader after two rounds, had a wild final day, opening with a double-bogey but making three birdies as well in a 77 which after rounds of 70 and 71 yesterday, allowed her to stay in front of the field, matched by a charging Hannah Ko.
Ko had the lowest round of the tournament in the third and final round, a 4-under par 68 sparked by an eagle on the Par 5 second, her first hole of the day in the shotgun start. Ko also had three birdies to move up six spaces and share the lead at the end of the day.
Kim won the two-hole playoff to become the 16th individual champion of a tournament in program history, and the first since 2021 when Holland Shourds won the Big West Championship. Additionally, Kim became the first winner of a tournament other than the Big West since Kassidy Teare won the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in 2015.
Twin sisters Janae and Jasmine Leovao each shot a 76 in the final round to help the Beach remain in the Top 3. Both finished in the Top 25, with Janae ending in a tie for 17th overall at +10 for the tournament with a 226, while Jasmine was +12 at 228. Kristina Ponomareva placed in a tie for 41st overall after a final round 77 saw the junior close 54 holes at 233.
In total, Long Beach State took third place overall as a team, one stroke out of third place with a three-round score of 890 behind UNC Wilmington at 889 and the team champions, Sacramento State.
After playing in back-to-back weeks, Long Beach State will get a short break before returning to action starting on March 27 at the Fresno State Classic, hosted by Fresno State at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.
