No. 4 Long Beach State Picks up 3-1 Victory Over No. 12 Ball State

Five LBSU players scored in double-digits as the Beach hit .395 in the win

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 4 Long Beach State turned in an all-around team effort as the Beach earned a 3-1 [25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15] victory over No. 12 Ball State on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (9-2) won the serve and pass game against Ball State (10-6) as the Beach led the Cardinals in kills (58-46), assists (54-42), aces (5-2), and digs (40-38). Ball State out-blocked LBSU 8.5 to 8.0 total team blocks on the night.
The Beach hit .395 as redshirt junior setter Aidan Knipe led the way with 48 assists. Knipe was efficient as he distributed the ball evenly with five players reaching double-digit kills. Leading the way for the Long Beach State offense was Spencer Olivier who finished the match with 16 kills on a .583 attack percentage (16-2-24), while Simon Torwie and Clarke Godbold each tallied 11 kills, and Sotiris Siapanis and Shane Holdaway registered 10 kills each.
Siapanis concluded the match with a double-double (10 kills, 12 digs) his first while donning the Black and Gold. His 12 digs marked a new career-high for the sophomore outside hitter.
Junior libero Mason Briggs also recorded 12 digs in the match, marking his sixth double-figure dig performance of the season. Additionally, he picked up 16 receptions without committing an error and contributed three assists.
The opening set started out going back and forth. However, Siapanis led the Beach on a 4-0 run as he served up a pair of aces to give Long Beach State a 19-13 lead. The Beach hit .517 in the frame and took a 25-19 win on back-to-back kills from Siapanis and Olivier.
Long Beach State started the second set off strong. The Beach jumped out in front to a quick 5-1 advantage after a 4-0 run capped by a Torwie ace. Ball State made things interesting as they tallied six-straight points to go up 11-10, forcing a Long Beach State timeout. The Beach were able to reset and regain the lead going up 16-12 before closing the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-17 on a Knipe ace.
Ball State out-hit Long Beach State .351 to .333 in the third set and used a 4-0 run and a 6-0 run to open up a 17-10 advantage. The Beach battled back to make it a three-point game (21-18), but the Cardinals claimed the game, 25-21.
The Beach was quick to bounce back as they jumped out in front to an 8-2 lead over Ball State in the fourth set. Long Beach State led the entire game and took a commanding 18-9 advantage after another Torwie ace. LBSU hit .417 in the frame and cruised to a 25-15 victory after back-to-back kills from Godbold and Olivier to secure the four-set win.
In addition to leading the Beach in scoring, Olivier had an all-around solid match. He finished the contest with four digs, two blocks, while collecting 28 receptions with only one error.
Torwie led the Beach at the net with four blocks. He also added a pair of aces to go along with a .588 attack percentage (11-1-17).
Godbold finished the night with seven digs, three blocks, and an assist to accompany his 11 kills.
Ball State was led by Kaleb Jenness who posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .306. Tinaishe Ndavazocheva also recorded double-digits with 11 kills. David Flores and Jakub Wiercinski split time at setting with 23 and 16 assists, respectively. Felix Egharevba's four blocks led the Cardinals.
Long Beach State will open Big West action on Friday, March 10 when they travel to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. contest.
