The Beach went 5-1 in their six duals at Cal Poly this weekend.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State won their first two duals on Sunday before falling to No. 8 Hawaii in the weekend finale. It wraps up a 5-1 weekend for the Beach with their win streak reaching as high as 12 consecutive matches.
Starting the day bright and early, the Beach started with Sacramento State for the first dual of the day. Making quick work of the Hornets, it was a clean 5-0 sweep for LBSU with just one set loss in the five flights.
Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah picked up the first point with a dominant 21-15, 21-8 straight set victory in the second flight. Natalie Glenn and Megan Widener secured the dual with a third flight win, taking down their Hornet opposition 21-9, 21-17.
In dual number two of the day, Long Beach State extended their win streak with a 5-0 sweep of CSU Bakersfield. Emily Mattoon and Maggie Walters flew to a fifth flight victory for the first point in straight sets. Gementera and Hagenah won their twelfth straight dual in the second flight to secure the victory.
After a first set loss, Christine Deroos and Mari Molina battled back to force a third set. Representing the final Beach pair in action, they cruised to a massive 15-4 victory in the set and give the Beach their second sweep of the day and third of the weekend.
In the biggest matchup of the weekend, the Beach had to start the dual with No. 8 Hawaii with an early deficit due to a forfeiture in the fourth flight. Glenn and Widener immediately erased the deficit with a straight set victory in three's.
The Rainbow Wahine responded with a win in fives to reclaim the lead. Needing a win to have a chance at securing the dual, the one's pair of Sydney Stevens and Julia Westby had an intense battle that included a 25-27 first set score. Unfortunately, they would fall short in the second set as well as UH secured the dual.
Gementera and Hagenah kept their personal win streak alive, however, taking down the Hawaii two's for their 13th consecutive victory, but the Beach fell 3-2.
Long Beach State returns home next week as they will host tri-duals on both Friday and Saturday at the LBSU Sand Courts.
