Another Walkoff Hands Softball Series Sweep Over UC Riverside

Shannon Haddad threw another complete game shutout as the Beach started Big West play unbeaten.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cam Cecil ended a true pitcher's duel with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, giving Long Beach State a 1-0 win over UC Riverside to finish off the three-game sweep to begin conference play.
Shannon Haddad allowed just two hits and struck out seven in a complete game shutout, her second of the weekend in a dominant performance in the circle. Haddad finished the weekend with a 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 14.0 scoreless innings.
The sophomore was really only threatened one time on the day. UC Riverside (13-15, 0-3 Big West) made a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning, as Lauren Garewal and Nadia Witt hit back-to-back seeing-eye singles just outside of the reach of Selena Perez at shortstop. Haddad was able to get Marissa Burk to ground out to Carly Robbins at third to end the inning and the threat for Long Beach State (13-14, 3-0 Big West).
Similarly, Long Beach State had runners in on four out of the first six innings, but was unable to break through against Maddie Heinlin until the bottom of the seventh.
Pinch hitter Sinclair Lawhorn drew a leadoff walk, and then in a critical play, Cassie Camou, running for Lawhorn, was able to beat out the throw on the force on a grounder from Teah Thies to put a runner in scoring position for Long Beach State. Senior Cam Cecil then delivered the big hit, a solid single to center that easily scored the winning run and the only run of the day in a 1-0 walkoff victory.
Long Beach State continues Big West play next weekend on the road with a three-game series at UC Davis. The series starts with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 and finishes with a single game on Sunday scheduled for Noon.
