Sophomore Corissa Sweet had four hits on the day to balance two outstanding starts in the circle.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cassie Camou's walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh capped an outstanding start to Big West play for Long Beach State, who won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader with UC Riverside.
Long Beach State (12-14, 2-0 Big West) had strong pitching throughout the day, allowing just one run over 14 innings in a 6-0 win in game one and a 2-1 comeback win in game two Saturday against UC Riverside (13-14, 0-2 Big West).
Shannon Haddad pitched a complete game shutout in the first game, allowing just one baserunner over the first four innings while Long Beach State broke the game open with a huge second inning.
LBSU scored all six of the team's runs in the second inning, the most this season for the Beach in one frame. Sophomore Carly Robbins set the tone for the inning with a solo home run, Emily Salazar and Cassie Camou followed with back-to-back singles, and a walk to Cam Cecil loaded the bases. After an RBI groundout scored one more run, singles from Jacquelyn Bickar, Sara Olson and Corissa Sweet brought home four more to give the Beach a 6-0 lead, more than enough support for Haddad.
UCR threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, but Haddad worked through the jams without surrendering a run on the way to her second shutout of the season.
Pitching once again played a major role in the second game. Emma Falen and Eryka Gonzales went pitch-for-pitch through the first four innings, all scoreless between the Highlanders and the Beach.
Falen eventually turned the ball over to Brooke Perez, but the result was the same through six innings as the teams remained scoreless. Gonzales, who had scattered four hits over six frames in her fourth start of the season, finally gave up an extra-base hit, a double to Leah Brito to start the seventh. A second double, this time from Samiya Jones, put the Highlanders in front 1-0 with the go-ahead run.
Sophia Fernandez came on in relief and closed the door on the Highlanders, and the Beach then got an immediate lift as Corissa Sweet smashed a triple to open the bottom half of the seventh, her fourth hit of the day. Robbins then delivered another big hit, this time a double in left center to tie the game and leave herself as the winning run on second base.
That would be huge as Camou lifted a single to left field just out of the reach of the Highlander infield, letting the sophomore race home with the winning run to open league play with a pair of wins.
The series closes with one more game on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
