Veterans led the way on the day as Emily Salazar, Cam Cecil and Cassie Camou all had two hits.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State persevered and closed out a long weekend with one final win, coming back to defeat South Dakota 4-1 in the final game of the Louisville Slugger Invitational over the last five days.
Long Beach State (10-14) finished with 10 hits to three for South Dakota (9-10), but had to wait until later in the contest to push in front.
Senior Samantha Fowler got the start for Long Beach State, and pitched two perfect innings, but the Beach left runners stranded in each of the first three frames and South Dakota pushed in front in the third inning.
Gabby Moser broke up the no-hit bid with a double, and raced home to score on an RBI single from Aleesia Sainz who put South Dakota on top 1-0. Clara Edwards would finish off a complete game for the Coyotes, and kept the lead for one more inning but the Beach finally broke through in the fifth.
Cam Cecil hit a one-out double to spark a rally, and after a single from Cassie Camou, pinch hitter Mikayla Ceballos tied the game with an RBI single, scoring Cecil. The Beach then broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth.
Rebekah Durazo started the inning with a leadoff double. Carly Robbins followed with a single, and a lucky break saw the ball squib into the outfield, scoring Durazo and putting the sophomore onto third base. Salazar's second hit of the day, an RBI single made the score 3-1, and Camou brought home Salazar with her second hit of the day to increase the lead once again.
Eryka Gonzales struck out one but also didn't allow a hit or a walk in three innings pitched to finish off the game for Long Beach State, collecting her third win of the season.
Long Beach State will remain at home and begin Big West conference action this weekend, hosting UC Riverside for three games. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday beginning at 1p.m. Live stats for all three games will be available at www.beachlivestats.com.
