Long Beach State Rolls Over Purdue In Lone Game Sunday

Sara Olson and Carly Robbins each had three hits as the Beach won 8-1.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After a first inning home run from Purdue, Long Beach State was in command the rest of the way, defeating Purdue 8-1 to kick off Sunday's action at the Louisville Slugger Invitational on the strength of 13 hits from the offense, a new season high.
Alex Echazarreta hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning for Purdue (11-7), but Sophia Fernandez and Long Beach State (9-14) got out of the inning with no further trouble and answered straight back in the bottom half.
Echazarreta picked up the first out of the game, but then Sara Olson sparked a rally for Long Beach State, who had five straight hits in the inning, including a double from Carly Robbins as the Beach took a 2-1 lead after one.
Long Beach State took advantage of a sloppy inning from Purdue in the second inning to extend their lead. Purdue picked up in the first two outs in the inning, but an error at third base extended the inning, which the Beach jumped on. An RBI double from Sara Olson continued the two-out rally, and a single from Corissa Sweet scored another run. Hits from Teah Thies and Carly Robbins helped the Beach plate two more and take a 6-1 lead after two innings.
Back-to-back doubles from Selena Perez and Emily Salazar added an additional run for the Beach in the third inning. That was plenty of support for Sophia Fernandez, who finished off five innings and allowing just the two hits from the first inning while striking out five. Mo Quinlan and Shelby Frutoz combined to finish off the game in the circle for Long Beach State.
Long Beach State offered their second game of the day against Sacramento State to Columbia to ensure teams got an equitable number of games as part of the team's home tournament. Long Beach State will play one additional game tomorrow morning, though, hosting South Dakota at 9:30 a.m. Live statistics will be available at www.beachlivestats.com.
