Long Beach State Wraps Up Day One at New Mexico Collegiate Classic

The Beach set five new top ten program marks on Friday.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Long Beach State track and field team saw action for day one of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday afternoon. A quartet of student-athletes highlighted on the afternoon with program top ten marks.
Day One Results
Mehki Mays and Caleb Roberson had outstanding 200m races, each finishing in the top 20 of the 67 unseeded runners. Mays was the higher of the duo with a 21.50aa time marking a new personal best and the fourth fastest time in program history. Roberson was not far behind at 21.67aa for the sixth fastest time in the record books.
The women's throwers were the other bright spot of the afternoon with Malia Talavou and Keeley Rasmussen setting new lifetime bests in the women's Weight Throw. Talavou posted a throw of 18.45m (60-06.50) which ranks fourth all-time while Rasmussen's mark of 16.51m (54-02.00) improved on her PR and tenth ranked throw. They finished seventh and 16th for the event, respectively.
The fifth and final top ten mark came from Cyprus Rice in men's Pole Vault. The sophomore claimed the top spot in the event clearing the bar at 5.05m (16-06.00) for a new personal best and the tenth best mark in program history.
On the women's side of Pole Vault, the trio of Annie Murphy, Maggie Lear, and Natasha Tehrani all cleared 3.64m (11-11.75) each finishing in the top ten.
Alex Heerink-van Breda made her 400m debut for the Beach and ran a lifetime best of 57.27 to finish fifth in the unseeded race.
Kyle Jankans and Pablo Gamez each recorded top ten finishes in their respective events. Jankans cleared 2.11m (6-11.00) in the High Jump for a sixth place finish while Gamez went 18.14m (59-06.25) in the men's Weight Throw for an eighth place finish.
The Beach will wrap up the New Mexico Collegiate Classic tomorrow morning with competition beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
