Long Beach State responded to a shutout loss with a 11-run victory in game two.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State split their doubleheader with Seattle to take the series victory on Monday afternoon. The Dirtbags (4-3) responded to a shutout loss in game one to dominate the Redhawks (1-5) in game two.
The first leg of the doubleheader was all Seattle scoring a run with one out in the top of the first and then tacking on two more in the fifth and seventh innings. On the mound, the duo of Nestor German and Blake Smith combined for a seven-hit shutout of the Dirtbags and totaling 10 strikeouts to even the series heading into game two of the doubleheader.
Eddie Saldivar was a huge bright spot for Long Beach State though, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.
After a 50-minute rain delay as the series finale was about to start, Head Coach Eric Valenzuela handed the ball to freshman Myles Patton. The southpaw answered the call tremendously with five innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out five on the way to his first collegiate victory.
The bats certainly woke up as well with 13 runs on 12 hits, scoring two or more runs in each of the first five innings. It marks a season-high for the Dirtbags in both single-game runs and hits early on in the 2023 campaign.
Rocco Peppi was the kickstarter for the offense with two singles and three RBI in the first two innings. Saldivar stayed hot at the plate with an RBI knock of his own in the first frame.
After manufacturing a pair of runs in the third, Joey Walls connected for his third home run and second in as many days in the fourth inning. Kyle Ashworth, Nick Marinconz, and Jonathon Long all kept the offense red hot in the next set of at-bats to put the Dirtbags in double-digits with a 12-1 lead through five.
A pair of freshman were responsible for the final LBSU run of the afternoon, starting with a Bryan Martinez double off the left field wall in his collegiate debut. He would come around to score on a Raoul Fabian sacrifice fly, his first collegiate RBI.
For the day, Saldivar went 5-for-7 with a run scored and two RBI. Peppi also had a great Monday, going 5-for-8 with a double, two runs, three RBI, and a walk. The duo have both raised their season batting averages well above the .400 mark.
The Dirtbags' Tuesday exhibition was canceled due to inclement weather in the forecast, so they will be back in action this weekend at the LeClair Classic hosted by East Carolina.
