Long Beach State Ends Weekend On A High Note With Win Over Arizona State
2/26/2023 10:29:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
Long Beach State now returns to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center to open Big West Conference play.
IRVINE, Calif.—Freshman Elisa Portillo was outstanding for the Beach as she scored six goals in a big 15-10 victory over No. 7 Arizona State to wrap up play at the Barbara Kalbus Invite.
In a flip of the script of the previous two games, it was Long Beach State who jumped out to an early lead, with Lara Luka opening the scoring in just under a minute of play. Luka would add another goal later in the quarter to go along with a goal from Amanda Price, and two goals from both Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo to give the Beach a 7-3 lead.
Portillo was dominant in the second quarter as she managed to score three goals. Anne de Kleer also added a goal, while the Beach stayed strong defensively only allowing Arizona State to score three goals which saw the Long Beach State lead increase to 11-6 at halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams, with neither scoring a goal until Arizona State found the back of the cage with 2:26 left in the quarter. However, Long Beach State would respond once again as Cardona and de Kleer would both score, putting the Beach up 3-7 heading into the final period.
Arizona State would score the first two goals of the quarter, but Elisa Portillo would score her sixth goal and Martina Cardona her fourth to respond to the challenge. Arizona State would score another late goal, but it proved to be a consolation as long Beach State would walk away with an impressive 15-10 victory over a strong opponent.
Chelsea Oliver put in yet another impressive performance in goal for Long Beach State, as she posted a season-high 15 saves to lead the defensive effort. Offensively for the Beach, Portillo led with six goals, followed by Cardona with four, de Kleer and Luka with two, and Price with one.
Long Beach State now turns its focus to conference play, as they welcome UC San Diego to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for the first Big West matchup of the season. The two teams are set to faceoff on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at longbeachstate.com.
