Long Beach State Loses To Utah In Final Game At Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

Long Beach State fell behind early and couldn’t solve for Utah’s Sydney Sandez.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Long Beach State was unable to find an answer for Utah pitcher Sydney Sandez, falling to Utah 4-0 in the final game of the weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Utah (11-4) nibbled away at the Beach through the early innings. Two singles to start the game for the Utes led to a pair of runs after two sacrifice flies, and another leadoff single from Haley Denning led to another run in the second inning as Utah took a 3-0 lead.
The Utes manufactured another run in the third inning with just one hit after a hit batter with one out with Karlie Davison driving in the run after a stolen base from pinch runner Shelbi Ortiz.
Sophia Fernandez tossed two more scoreless innings and Shelby Frutoz added one to keep the Beach within reach, but Sandez closed out the complete game to hand Long Beach State (5-10) the defeat.
There was late drama as Selena Perez doubled with one out to put a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Mikayla Medellin reached on an error to put runners on the corners, but Sandez finished off the inning to maintain the shutout.
Long Beach State will remain on the road for another non-conference tournament next week, playing four games in San Diego as part of the San Diego Classic II. The Beach will face hosts San Diego State, Montana and play twice against Boston, starting with a matchup against the Terriers on Friday, March 3.
