Mikayla Ceballos’ solo home run in support of a complete game from Eryka Gonzales gave the Beach a win over Utah Valley.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – With first pitch just before 11 p.m., Long Beach State persevered through a long day for a victory in the early hours of Saturday morning, holding off Utah Valley 3-1 in a comeback victory.
Utah Valley (3-8) took the lead in the top of the first inning, as Jaeden Barajas lifted a fly ball to left field that was just outside of the reach of Sara Olson over the fence, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Outside of that pitch, Eryka Gonzales was masterful in giving Long Beach State (5-7) a complete game performance in the first win of the season for the new transfer. Gonzales pitched a complete game and scattered just three hits the rest of the way, striking out four while keeping Utah Valley off of the board.
Long Beach State bounced back in the bottom of the fourth inning, evening the score. Rebekah Durazo reached base to start the rally, and after a base hit from Mikayla Ceballos, an RBI single from Selena Perez evened the score at 1-1.
Ceballos delivered once more in the bottom of the sixth. Leading off the inning, the junior smashed a no doubt home run to right center to give the Beach the lead, and after a single from Sinclair Lawhorn, Carly Robbins doubled home an insurance run to help support the complete game from Gonzales on the way to the 3-1 victory, clocking in as final just before 1 a.m. in the morning.
In the first game of the day, Long Beach State held tough early but eventually gave way against a Top 10 opponent in No. 8 Washington (11-3). Sophomore Shannon Haddad worked her way through the Husky lineup in two relatively clean innings in the first and second, but the second time around proved to be trouble for the Beach.
A one-out double from Baylee Klingler followed by a triple from Madison Huskey got Washington on the scoreboard, and an RBI single from Sami Reynolds plated another run in the top of the third inning. The Huskies then broke through with a big inning the fifth, with big hits coming on a two-run double from Reynolds and a two-run single from Avery Hobson.
An error in the sixth helped Washington push past the run-rule barrier, scoring four runs to finish off the 11-0 win.
Carly Robbins had a pair of hits leading the way offensively for Long Beach State, both leadoff singles, but the Beach was unable to capitalize on either as Ruby Meylan finished off the complete game for Washington, striking out 10 but giving up five hits to the Beach.
Long Beach State is scheduled for two more games on Saturday as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. First up, the Beach will face BYU at Noon, followed by 5:30 p.m. contest against No. 24 Missouri. Both games will be streamed through FloSoftball.
