Simon Torwie Earns Second Big West Defensive Player of the Week Honor

The junior middle blocker led the Beach to a pair of sweeps over NJIT last week
IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State's Simon Torwie picked up his second Big West Defensive Player of the Week award of the season after leading the No. 4 Beach to a pair of sweeps over NJIT last week.
Torwie was excellent at the net as he averaged 2.50 blocks per set over the two matches. His solid blocking defense kept NJIT off balance as they mustered a .093 attack percentage for the weekend. In addition to his defensive prowess, Torwie excelled on both sides of the ball for the Beach hitting .522 (14-2-23) with 14 kills, while also adding two digs, and serving up a pair of aces.
The 6-foot-10 Torwie led the Beach to 13.5 total team blocks on Friday night against NJIT as he matched his career-best with eight blocks (one solo stop, and seven block assists). He also added seven kills on a .462 clip (7-1-13) to go along with two digs.
The following night, the junior middle blocker put up seven block assists to lead the Beach to 13.0 total team blocks. He also contributed seven kills on a .600 attack percentage (7-1-10), while serving up two aces.
On the year, Torwie is averaging 1.74 blocks per set to lead the nation. With his stout blocking defense, Torwie has led Long Beach State to a 2.97 blocks per set average, which is also tops in the country.
