Sophomore Eryka Gonzales allowed just one hit and one earned run in her first start of the year.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A strong start from sophomore Eryka Gonzalez and an RBI single from Corissa Sweet helped Long Beach State open a 1-0 lead over Cal, but the Golden Bears struck back in the late innings to grab a second win in two days over Long Beach State.
Long Beach State (3-6) got a lift early from Eryka Gonzales, who made her first start of the season in the circle. Gonzales retired the first nine batters from California (8-2) in order, helping set the Beach up for success in the early innings.
After leaving runners on in the first and second innings, Long Beach State was able to punch through finally in the fifth inning. Selena Perez drew a leadoff walk to start the inning, and after a bunt, an error put runners on the corners in front of sophomore Corissa Sweet who singled up the middle to put the Beach in front 1-0. Haylei Archer was able to contain the damage to just the run, however, and the Golden Bears broke through themselves the next inning.
After a hit batter, Long Beach State was able to get the first out, but the Golden Bears loaded the bases after tying the game at 1-1, and an ensuing walk and two hit batters from the LBSU pitching staff helped Cal take a 4-0 lead.
An RBI single from D'Asha Saiki and another bases loaded walk plated two more for Cal in the top of the seventh, and while the Beach put two on in the bottom half, Archer finished off the complete game for the Golden Bears in the win.
Long Beach State closes out their first home tournament of the season with one final game tomorrow, hosing ULM starting at 10 a.m.
