LIHUE, Kauai – Long Beach State sophomore Ian Gilligan turned in a masterful performance in the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate as he fired a 61 for 11-under par to set a new career-best and Ocean Course at Hokuala record. After one full round, Gilligan sits at the top of the leaderboard while Long Beach State is tied for third with a 10-under par showing.
The John A. Burns Intercollegiate was initially scheduled for three rounds over as many days, but with inclement weather looming in the forecast, the decision was made to begin the second round at the conclusion of the first. The goal of getting 36 holes in on day one was cut short due to darkness as the Beach managed to complete 11 holes of the second round.
At the completion of the first round, Long Beach State is tied for third with No. 19 Arizona as both teams have shot 10-under par thus far. Leading the way is BYU with 15-under par, while Cal is in second with 11-under par.
Gilligan has been the story of the first round as the Reno, Nev., native breezed through the opening round sinking nine birdies to go along with a pair of eagles on the second and fourth holes to finish with a course-record, and new single-round career-best of 61 for 11-under par. That mark is also the Best 18-Hole Score and Best First Round Score in Long Beach State Men's Golf program history. Gilligan began the second round on the back nine and is currently even with par after seven holes.
Freshmen Krishnav Nikhol Chopraa and Jack Cantlay shot even with par in the first round as they concluded the round tied for 45th. Isaac Rodea and Jaden Huggins both posted a 1-over par in the first 18 holes as they are tied for 57th.
Huggins is 1-under par after 10 holes in the second round, while Chopraa is 1-over through nine holes. Rodea got through 11 holes in the second round and is currently 1-over par. Rounding out the Beach in the second round is Cantlay who is at 5-over after 11 holes.
The second round will continue Friday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m. (HST)/10:30 a.m. (PST), weather permitting. Live results will be available via GolfStat.com.
