Back To Winning Ways As Long Beach State Comes Away With Win At CSU Bakersfield

2/11/2023 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Jadon Jones had a game-high 18 points to guide a team effort as seven players had eight or more points for Long Beach State.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Long Beach State went on the road and got it done in classic fashion, slowing down the home Roadrunners with solid defense and helped their effort with 80% free throw shooting in a 79-69 win in the Icardo Center.

Long Beach State (15-11, 9-5 Big West) dominated on the glass in a team effort as the Beach saw the Traores, particularly Lassina, limited with foul trouble on the night. The Beach outrebounded CSU Bakersfield 36 to 27, forced 16 turnovers and got off to a good start by holding the Runners to under 40 percent shooting In the first half.

The Beach were balanced on the evening, with seven players scoring eight points or more on the evening, led by Jadon Jones who had a game-high 18. Jones also shared in the team's rebounding lead with Aboubacar Traore and Amari Stroud, who matched a career-high with 12 points and six rebounds off of the bench.

With the score 14-13 after the opening minutes, Long Beach State would clamp down defensively to open up a cushion that would hold for most of the contest. The Beach limited the Runners to just one basket for nearly 10 full minutes of game play, opening up an 11-point lead on an AJ George putback.

Long Beach State would continue to push, opening up a lead as large as 18 points and heading into halftime on top 39-27. With Lassina Traore in the lineup once more, the Beach went inside early in the second half to help push the lead to 16 once more. CSU Bakersfield made a final push, cutting the lead to three points at 63-60, but LBSU got an answer from Tone Hunter to push the lead back to two possessions.

Baskets from Aboubacar Traore and Stround followed by two free throws from Aboubacar increased the lead back to 10 points and the Beach continued their strong effort from the free throw line. On the night, the Beach shot 25-of-31 from the stripe, including a 8-for-8 effort from Jones.

Long Beach State will get an early start next week, traveling to UC Riverside for a game Wednesday night before hosting Hawai'I on Saturday, February 18 at 4 p.m.
