The Beach outhit and out-blocked the Rainbow Wahine in the setback

HONOLULU – It was a battle for postseason seeding in the final regular season contest of the year on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center on the islands. Despite a hard-fought effort, Long Beach State came up on the wrong end of a 3-1 [23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 17-25] decision to Hawaii.

With the loss, the Beach (19-9, 13-5 Big West) have secured the No. 4 seed in the inaugural Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine (21-8, 14-4 Big West) have earned the No. 2 seed as well as a bye into the semifinals.

The Beach will face No. 5 seed UC Irvine in the first round of The Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m., at the Walter Pyramid. For more postseason information, please click HERE.

Long Beach State hit .276 in the match to Hawaii's .216 clip, and out-blocked the Rainbow Wahine 8.0 to 6.0. The 'Bows, however, held the edge over the Beach in kills (57-49), assists (53-42), and aces (6-5). Both teams came away with 46 digs on the night.

Elise Agi led Long Beach's offensive attack with 14 kills on a .419 attack percentage (14-1-31). She narrowly missed a double-double as she finished with nine digs, while adding three aces, two assists, and a block.

Hanna Lesiak and Natalie Glenn also concluded the match with double-figure kills. Lesiak posted 12, while putting up three blocks and two digs. Glenn registered 10 kills on a .308 attack percentage (10-2-26) to go along with two blocks, two digs, and one assist.

Zayna Meyer paced the offense with 36 assists, while adding five kills of her own on a .556 clip (5-0-9). She also logged seven digs and one block on the defensive end.

Libero Savana Chacon anchored the backrow with 18 digs, while also chipping in three assists, and one ace in the match.

Leading the Beach at the net was Katie Kennedy who put up five blocks to go along with six kills and one dig.

Long Beach State got off to a hot start kicking off the match on a 7-0 run. The Beach opened up a 10-point advantage over Hawaii (18-8) after a kill from Lesiak forcing the 'Bows to utilize their final timeout. Hawaii seemed to refocus during the break as they came out and went on a 10-0 run to even the score at 18-all. During that span, the Beach called two separate timeouts, but were unable to put a stop the 'Bows run. From there, the conference foes battled each other back-and-forth in a nailbiter of a set. However, Hawaii came away with the victory, 25-23.

The second set began close, but saw the Rainbow Wahine pull away, 14-8. The Beach closed the gap (15-13) after scoring four-straight points. Long Beach State continued to chip away and knotted the game at 17-all, which forced UH to call a timeout. An ace from Chacon gave LBSU a 19-18 edge, but a 4-0 Hawaii run would put the 'Bows back on top, 23-21. With the crowd behind them, Hawaii managed to put away the second set, 25-23, and take a 2-0 lead into the third.

Following the intermission, Long Beach State came out determined. The Beach hit .577 in the third set as they knocked down 17 kills on 26 swings, while committing just two attack errors. LBSU went on an early 7-0 run to open up an 8-1 lead over the 'Bows. Long Beach State went on another run, 5-0, to take a convincing 20-11 advantage over Hawaii, before scoring four-straight to push it to set point (24-13). The Beach went on to take the third set, 25-14.

Long Beach State struggled in the fourth set as the Beach hit .053 in the frame. Hawaii, meanwhile, hit .357 as the hosts controlled most of the set. The 'Bows broke an early 4-4 tie and never looked back. UH led the rest of the way and held a 15-8 lead as LBSU utilized its final timeout of the set. From there, the 'Bows took the game and match, 25-17.

Hawaii was led by Amber Igiede who finished with 21 kills on a .432 hitting percentage (21-5-37). She also added four blocks and three digs. Caylen Alexander just missed a double-double with 19 kills, nine digs, two blocks, and one ace. Kate Lang distributed 50 assists, while adding nine digs, two blocks, one kill, and one ace. Libero Tayli Ikenaga finished the match with 15 digs.
