The 2023 Orioles became the first team in Major League history to go from losing 110 games to winning over 100 games in a three-year span

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Former Long Beach State Dirtbag Brandon Hyde was named 2023 American League Manager of the Year on Nov. 14.

Receiving 27 of the 30 first-place votes (the most by a manager in the voting since 2008), Hyde received 144 points as Texas' Bruce Bochy (61) and Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash (52) rounded out the finalists.

Hyde's Orioles were only 1-of-3 MLB teams to win at least 100 games in 2023 (101-61) and were the only team in the American League to surpass the 100-win plateau. The Orioles won their first American League East title since 2014 and reached the playoffs (as the No. 1 seed) for the first time since 2016.

Baltimore won 100 games in a season for the first time since 1980 and recorded its highest win total since 1979 (102). The 2023 Orioles became the first team in Major League history to go from losing over 110 games (52-110, 2021) to winning over 100 games in three years.

Hyde played for Long Beach State in 1997, hitting three home runs and posting 14 RBI in 40 appearances. Hyde appeared in 200 minor league games as a player before becoming a manager in the Florida Marlins' organization (2005-09). In 2010, he became the Marlins Bench Coach, a position he would hold for two seasons. Hyde moved to the Chicago Cubs, where he served as Bench Coach and First Base Coach from 2013-18 before becoming the Orioles' manager in 2019.
