Long Beach State Falls On The Road To Cal Poly

Zayna Meyer and Elise Agi each record a double-double in the loss
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After winning the first set in dominating fashion, Long Beach State battled Cal Poly to overtime in the next three sets, but the Mustangs came out on top as the Beach fell, 3-1 [25-15, 25-27, 25-27, 25-27] on Saturday night at Mott Athletics Center.
The Beach (18-8, 12-4 Big West) were led by Zayna Meyer and Elise Agi who both finished with double-doubles. Meyer posted 35 assists, 11 digs, four kills, and two blocks in the loss, while Agi recorded a team-leading 15 kills, 12 digs, four assists, three aces, and one block.
Cal Poly (17-10, 11-4 Big West), meanwhile, got a strong showing from Tommi Stockham as she registered a team-best 17 kills on the night. Setter Emme Bullis concluded the match with 44 assists to go along with seven digs and five blocks.
LBSU's Katie Kennedy hit .320 in the match and recorded 13 kills, while also logging five digs and four blocks.
On the defensive end, Long Beach State got a nine-dig performance from Jenna Giambi and an eight-dig showing from Savana Chacon in the backcourt.
At the net, Livi Narancich led the way with five blocks, while Kameron Bacon and Kennedy added four blocks each.
Long Beach State came out ready to play. The Beach surged out in front to a 10-0 lead capped by back-to-back kills from Kennedy and Agi. The Beach held a convincing lead throughout the set as they cruised to a 25-15 victory on a kill from Narancich.
Set two was much more competitive. Cal Poly jumped out in front to a 6-2 lead after scoring five-straight points. But the Beach chipped way and used a 4-0 run of their own to go up 11-8. The game remained close the remained of the set as the conference foes traded points. Cal Poly reached set point, 24-23, but the Beach fought off three set points before the Mustangs put the game away, 27-25.
The third set was much like the second. The conference foes traded points throughout. Both teams kept it close and the Beach held a 20-19 edge over the Mustangs late in the set. However, Cal Poly reached set point, 24-23 first. Long Beach did a good job fighting off three different set points, before the Mustangs claimed the third set, 27-25.
Cal Poly took an early lead in the fourth set (12-8), but Long Beach State would not go quietly. The Beach used several short 3-0 runs to go up 14-13, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Tia Chavira. Chavira would go on to finish the match with five aces to tie her career-high. The Beach got a kill from Agi, followed by an ace to push it to set point, 24-21, forcing the Mustangs to call a timeout. The break in action worked well for Cal Poly as they came out and closed the set and match on a 6-1 run to come back and win, 27-25.
Long Beach State will face UC San Diego on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in San Diego, Calif. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
