Long Beach State Comes Up Short At UC Santa Barbara

Elise Agi records 22 kills, while Zayna Meyer posts a double-double in the Beach’s road loss
SANTA BARBARA – Long Beach State saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end on Friday at the Thunderdome as the Beach came up short at UC Santa Barbara, 3-1 [18-25, 27-25, 23-25, 19-25].
With the loss, Long Beach State falls to 18-7 and 12-3 in The Big West. Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara improves to 24-3 overall and 14-1 in conference action and puts a two-match cushion between themselves and the Beach in the Big West standings.
Elise Agi led all scorers with 22 kills on the night. She hit .364 (22-6-44), while also adding six digs, two aces, and one assist.
Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer was on-point tonight as she finished with her 11th double-double of the season. Meyer collected 44 assists and 17 digs in the match.
Also reaching double digit kills was freshman outside hitter Livi Narancich who posted 10 kills on a .292 clip. Narancich also contributed five digs and one block.
Defensive specialist Jenna Giambi was excellent anchoring the backrow as she logged 16 digs, just three off her career-high.
The Beach led the Gauchos in kills (56-53), assists (51-49), and digs (65-59). However, UCSB held the edge in aces (12-5) and blocks (9.5-5.0), while outhitting Long Beach .234 to .199.
The first set was close as the conference foes traded points back-and-forth early on. The Gauchos used a 5-1 run to go up 11-9. However, the Beach were quick to use a run of their own to counter and take a 14-12 lead after an ace by Chacon. UCSB took an 18-15 lead forcing Long Beach State to call a timeout. The Gauchos came out of the break in action and went on another run extending their lead to six (22-16). UC Santa Barbara eventually took the first set, 25-18.
UC Santa Barbara took an early 6-2 lead, but Long Beach State got back in the game quickly pulling within one (7-6). However, by the media timeout, the Gauchos were on top once again, 15-11. The Beach went on a 4-1 run to pull within three (21-18). That seemed to be the turning point for LBSU as they continued to chip away before scoring four-straight point to even the score at 23-all. Agi turned up the heat in the final points of the frame as she scored three of LBSU's four points in the Beach's 4-1 run to close out the set and win, 27-25.
Tied 1-1, the third set was a crucial one that started out close. After a 4-0 LBSU run, the Beach lead the Gauchos, 15-14, at the media timeout. However, the Gauchos would score four-straight points of their own to turn their one-point deficit into a five-point lead (19-14). Long Beach State chipped away at UCSB's lead, and managed to cut it down to two (23-21). The Beach even fought off two Gaucho set points, but ended up dropping the set, 25-23.

The Beach battled and stayed within striking distance in the fourth set. But a 6-0 UCSB run gave the Gauchos a 21-13 advantage that Long Beach State could not overcome. Despite the Beach's 4-0 run to cut the host's lead down to four (21-17), LBSU was unable to make a comeback as UC Santa Barbara took the match, 3-1.
UCSB was led by Briana McKnight's 14 kills and 11 digs, while Tasia Farmer added 11 kills on a .320 attack percentage. Setters Grace McIntosh (23 assists) and Michelle Zhao (15) paced the Gauchos offense. McIntosh also recorded a double-double with 13 digs, while leading the squad in aces (4). In the backrow, libero Macall Peed led the way with 17 digs. At the net, McKnight put up a team-leading five blocks.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track when it faces Cal Poly on the road on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
