A four-point week keeps Long Beach State right in the thick of the Big West standings with three weeks remaining.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Sophomore Cherrie Cox finished with a brace bookending a goal from Summer Laskey as Long Beach State picked up a crucial road win at CSUN by a 3-1 margin. The two goals from Cox ties her for the Big West lead, while Laskey had a three-point day with a goal and an assist for LBSU.
CSUN (1-10-3, 1-2-2 Big West) turned aside some early shots from Brooklyn Antonucci and then struck first in Northridge, as a switch from Kacie Garrity found Ashley Cruz who was able to loft a header over the top of Zora Standifer to give the Matadors an early 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State (7-5-3, 2-2-2 Big West) quickly bounced back however, earning a corner minutes later. After a header that was cleared away, Antonucci's follow up clanged off the post and landed at the feet of Kassandra Ceja, who was able to turn to Cherrie Cox for the tap-in to even the score 1-1.
Standifer kept the score there with a pair of big saves in the next 20 minutes. In a similar play to the first goal, Standifer stood tall to block Cruz on the diagonal switch. The junior then had a diving save on a free kick from just outside of the penalty box from Brooke Mobeck to keep the teams even.
That effort paid off in the closing seconds of the half, as Amanda Perez sent in a perfectly weighted cross for a first-time finish from Summer Laskey to give the Beach a 2-1 lead after 45 minutes.
In the second half, Laskey continued to be involved in a big way. In the 53rd, Laskey made a heads up clearance in the defensive half to save a sure Matador goal off of the line. With play going end-to-end, Amanda Perez was then turned away only by a last second tackle from Sami Kolin.
The Beach broke the game open with a third goal in the 59th minute. Laskey was able to turn the corner at the endline, and found Cox, who secured her brace with a smooth finish in the box to best Hayden Mauldin and make the score 3-1 in favor of LBSU.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field for their next game, hosting UC San Diego at 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 15. Live coverage will be provided by ESPN+ as the Beach looks to extend their home unbeaten streak to six games.
