Long Beach State dominant in a 2-1 victory over UCSD, now unbeaten in seven at George Allen Field.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A first-half brace from Cherrie Cox sparked a dominant win for Long Beach State, who controlled large stretches of the contest in a 2-1 win over UC San Diego.
Long Beach State (8-5-3, 3-2-2 Big West) managed over 60% possession and held 13 shots to six, including just one corner kick and one shot on target on the night with a big lead early over UC San Diego (3-8-4, 2-3-2 Big West).
Elysia Laramie opened the action with a shot under 90 seconds, and Long Beach State broke the game open with Cherrie Cos within 10 minutes. With pressing action from the Beach within the wing forced a Triton miscue that was judged perfectly from Cox, a quick reaction and a perfect finish that quickly opened the score 1-0.
The Beach found Cox again quickly, as an entry from Zoe Willis was flicked on from Laramie into space for the sophomore who delivered again with another fine finish for her second brace in two games to open up a 2-0 lead.
Long Beach State was in complete control through the first 45 minutes with the two goals and held the Tritons to just one shot on target and keeper Zora Standifer was untroubled througout the first half.
Kassandra Ceja continued to build pressure for the Beach, opening up another opportunity with a header that was deflected off the post for the Tritons. The junior was nearly sprung again behind in the 71st minute as the Beach moved into the 75th minute without allowing a shot goal from UC San Diego.
Entirely against the run of play, UC San Diego sparked the game back to life in the final minutes with a goal from Talisa Lin. Earning their only corner kick of the night, Courtney Hilliards's cross was flicked on to Lin who put the Tritons on the board in the 81st minute.
The Beach defense held UC San Diego without another short on goal entirely in the rest of the contest to finish off the win for all three points. Long Beach State has now seven straight games unbeaten at George Allen Field including no losses in Big West conference place at home.
The battle for the postseason heats up in the coming weeks with just three games remaining in the regular season. The Beach will take on UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton on the road next week before facing Hawai'i to close the regular season on Thursday, October 26 at George Allen Field.
