Long Beach State and UC Irvine battled to a scoreless draw, but the ‘Eaters advanced after winning the penalty shootout.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State goalkeeper made seven saves over 110 minutes in a scoreless draw with UC Irvine, but the Anteaters were perfect in the shootout and eliminated the Beach from the postseason in Sunday's Big West Championship Opening Round at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State (10-6-4) got seven saves from junior goalkeeper Zora Standifer, who was outstanding in her return after serving a one-game red card suspension. Playing all 110 minutes, Standifer recorded her fourth shutout of the season in denying UC Irvine (6-7-6).
Kassandra Ceja had the first great chance of the game, coming free and forcing contact with UC Irvine goalkeeper Gio Hinojosa, but the early penalty shout went by the wayside. UC Irvine's first good chance came in the 22nd, a free kick from a dangerous spot that was nonetheless turned aside by Standifer.
After 30 minutes that mostly favored UCI, the Beach turned the momentum around towards the close of the half. Julia Moore found herself free for a good shot saved by Hinojosa in the 35th minute, and substitute Summer Laskey had a great shot saved just minutes after coming on in the 41st.
In an evenly played second half, each team had one great chance turned aside. In the 72nd, some great technique led to a shot from Kana Uchida and the redshirt freshman recycled the blocked shot, finding Ceja in the box for a great opportunity that was only turned aside by some desperate UCI defending. Then in the 81st, a UC Irvine corner was cleared by LBSU but fell to Chloe Ragon at the top of the box who's well-place lofted effort was palmed clear by Standifer.
After a mostly uneventful pair of extra time periods, the game went to penalties. UC Irvine didn't miss a penalty, and while junior Maddy Perez smashed her penalty kick into the corner to give the Beach some life after two initial misses, a final make from Marissa LeVine sent the Anteaters through to the semifinals.
Long Beach State made its 12th appearance in the Big West Tournament, reaching the 10-win mark for the 14th time in school history and first time since 2018. The Beach led the Big West in offense with 37 goals and sophomore Cherrie Cox was the Big West Offensive Player of the Year, the second straight winner from LBSU.
