Long Beach State Bounces Back With Victory Over Cal State Fullerton

Robert Lopez Duart Led the Beach with seven goals.
FULLERTON, Calif.—The Long Beach State men's water polo team (15-10, 2-2) defeated Cal State Fullerton in the first matchup between the two teams in 37 years, 20-13. The bounce back victory featured eight different goal scorers, highlighted by a seven-goal performance by Robert Lopez Duart.
Long Beach State came out of the gates firing early as they scored seven goals in the first quarter, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Evan Cain, Marc Frigola, and Robert Lopez Duart each scored twice, while Nikola Jancic also added a goal to contribute to the offensive outburst to start the game.
Cal State Fullerton responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Beach 5-4, to cut the Long Beach State lead to three goals at halftime. Lopez Duart added two more goals and Caleb Francisco and Alexander Makshanoff also got on the scoresheet, as Long Beach State led 11-8 headed into the second half.
Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton would trade goals in the third quarter, with each team scoring three goals. Lopez Duart and Makshanoff each scored again, while Abdelrahman Soliman also scored a goal for the Beach.
The Beach put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Titans 6-2 to give them a comfortable 20-13 victory. Riley Catino and Robert Lopez Duart each scored twice, and Caleb Francisco and Marc Frigola each scored again.
Long Beach State also had a stout defensive effort throughout the game. Eight different players recorded steals, with Evan Cain leading the way with three. Liam Ward also had two steals while making six saves in goal.
Long Beach State will return to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Saturday, November 4 at 7 p.m. as Big West action continues with a game against UC Santa Barbara. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on theFOSH.net.
