The banquet will center award celebrating the team’s seniors and outstanding performers from the 2022 season as well as an introduction to the 2023 roster.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Track and Field team will host their annual awards banquet on Saturday, January 14 at The Pointe. The event will honor the team's 2022 men's and women's teams, outstanding performers, and seniors.
The 2022 season was one for the record books at the Beach headlined by the second Big West Championship in the women's program history. The men finished second in the team standings at the conference championships, making Long Beach State the only program in the Big West to finish in the top four of both the men's and women's standings.
Jason Smith claimed his second consecutive Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Year along with the Athlete of the Meet honor to go with it. The San Bruno native became just the fourth student-athlete, male or female, in conference history to win back-to-back yearly honors and just the third to win it three times in his career.
Ryley Fick also garnered end of the year honors, being named the Co-Women's Track Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Meet. She is the first women's track athlete in school history to win the award since the Big West created separate track/field yearly awards.
Overall, the Beach track and field team garnered 19 total event conference titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons with a split of 10 from the men's team and nine from the women's team. They also set six new school records, including two each from Fick and Michael Phillips in the distance events, as well as cross country program records from Phillips and Allie Scimia.
Along with recognizing the awards and seniors, Directory of Track and Field Andy Sythe will introduce the new 2023 recruiting class. With 23 men and 18 women, it represents the largest recruiting class in Long Beach State history.
