Women's Tennis Begins Fall Season At SDSU Fall Classic

Long Beach State women’s tennis officially opened its fall season today.
San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State women's tennis officially opened its Fall season this morning at the USD Hogan Tennis Center. The Beach concluded the first day of the tournament by going 5-3 in singles and 2-2 in doubles.
"It was a good start to the weekend," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We battled through some matches and identified some areas where we can improve tomorrow."
In singles action, Mathilde Tranberg and Sarah Medik both got the day started obtaining victories in their white single flights. Medik completed her flight, winning, 6-4, 6-3, against Yulia Zhytelna of CSUN. Tranberg's flight against CSUN's Sasha Turchak ended with three competitive sets resulting in 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
In the red flight, Rhona Cook defeated Veronika Lebisova from UTEP in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Additionally, in the gray flights, Sheena Masuda defeated Jackie O'Neill of CSUN in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 while Hana Becirovic Novak gained her victory against Tallia Harper of CSUN in three keenly contested sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
Three out of the five single flights came down to three grueling sets. However, the Beach remained focused and persistent in obtaining their victories.
In doubles action, the pairing of Masuda and Cook defeated Cecile Morin and Rania Azziz of SDSU, with a 6-2 victory in the red flight. In the black flight, the pairing of Peppi Ramstedt and Medik defeated O'Neill and Urdiales of CSUN.
Medik and Tranberg will compete in their respective top singles flight tomorrow, while the pairing of Masuda and Cook will compete in the top doubles flight too.
Action is scheduled to resume on Saturday, October 1 at 9 a.m. with doubles action to begin the day, followed by single flights.
