
Long Beach State Sets the School Record with 30-Under Par Win at Nick Watney Invitational

Sophomore Ian Gilligan fired a 14-under par to lead the team to victory

KINGSBURG, Calif. – The Long Beach State Men's Golf team took an early lead at the Nick Watney Invitational and never looked back as they set the program record with an 822 30-under finish en route to winning the tournament. The Beach were led by sophomore Ian Gilligan who won the individual title with a career-best 14-under par 199 performance to tie the program's low 54-hole score.
The Beach finished five strokes ahead of second place Cal State Fullerton (-25), who were followed by Fresno State (-22), Grand Canyon (-21), and Seattle University (-14).
Gilligan built on his hot start in the first two rounds in which he shot 66-64, firing a 2-under par 69 to finish in a tie for first place. Gilligan finished the tournament with 17 birdies, which was the most in the competition. The sophomore also added an eagle on the final day of the tournament.
Senior Isaac Rodea also finished the tournament strong with a 5-under par 66. His final score of 203 (-10) was good for a fifth-place finish. Rodea added six birdies on Tuesday which gave him a total of 16 in the tournament, just one behind Gilligan.
It was a complete team effort from the Beach to clinch the victory with strong performances from freshman Jaden Huggins, sophomore Steven Deutsch, and senior Bryce Kvick. Huggins finished the tournament in 15th place with a final score of 210 (-3), Deutsch tied for 30th with a score of 213 (E), and Kvick tied for 69th with a score of 222 (+9).
On the individual side of the tournament, Krishnav Nikhil Chopraa finished with a strong performance in his Long Beach State debut. The freshman was consistent throughout the three rounds going 70-70-71 finishing with a 2-under par 211 and tied for 16th place.
The Beach will be back in action on Monday, October 10th at The Mackenzie hosted by Cal.
