BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in an outstanding road performance on Saturday night as the Beach swept CSU Bakersfield by set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 at the Icardo Center.
The Beach (6-4, 1-1 Big West) led the Roadrunners (3-11, 0-2 Big West) in almost every statistical category on the night. LBSU out-hit CSUB .212 to .044, and held the lead over the Runners in kills (36-27), assists (32-25), aces (7-2), and digs (32-23). The Beach and the Runners had equal blocks with 11.0 each.
Redshirt freshman Zayna Meyer piloted the Beach to a solid performance as she dished out 28 assists, while adding seven blocks, five kills, and one digs. Meyer did a good job distributing the ball as senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach knocked down a team-best nine kills on a .389 attack percentage, while sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn finished the match with eight kills on a .250 clip.
Schwarzenbach also added five blocks to go along with one dig, while Glenn contributed eight digs and three blocks.
Sophomore defensive specialist Savana Chacon and senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz paced the back row with a total of 17 digs. Chacon led the way with nine, while Dela Cruz added eight. Savana Chacon was also a key component from the service line as she served up four aces in the contest, while her older sister Morgan Chacon added three aces.
The Beach took the first set to really get going as they edged the Runners, 25-22, in the opening frame. Long Beach hit .179, while Bakersfield hit .125. The back and forth contest saw six ties, before the Beach came away with the win.
The second set saw five early ties, however a 7-0 Long Beach State run opened up the game for the Beach (19-13) forcing a CSUB timeout. The break in action did little to help the Runners as LBSU hit .238 and held Bakersfield to a mere .087 attack percentage en route to cruising to a 25-16 win.
The third set was all Long Beach State as the Beach opened the game up 5-0. Bakersfield battled back and evened the score at 11-all, but the Beach would not be denied. LBSU used an 8-2 run to break the game open, 20-13, as the Beach put the game out of reach and surged ahead to a 25-14 victory to complete the sweep.
Bakersfield's Sophia Bertotti Metoyer led the team with six kills, but also hit into six attack errors to even out her attack percentage at .000. Laura De Pra finished with 23 assists, five digs, and two blocks, while Paige Calvin posted seven digs, and Ava Palm registered six blocks.
Long Beach State continues its road swing with a Tuesday, Sept. 27 match up at Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym.
