Long Beach State Drops a Four-Set Decision to Cal State Fullerton

Callie Schwarzenbach, Katie Kennedy record a new career-highs with 17 kills each

FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State won the first set, but dropped the next three closely contested games as the Beach fell, 3-1 [25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 22-25] to Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night at Titan Gym.
Long Beach State (6-5, 1-2 Big West) hit .274 on the night – the team's highest attack percentage of the season – and led Cal State Fullerton (8-3, 2-1 Big West) in kills (59-55) and aces (6-5). However, the Titans hit .311 in the match and held the lead over the Beach in assists (51-46), digs (42-37), and blocks (4.0-2.0).
Callie Schwarzenbach and Katie Kennedy had career nights as the duo tallied 17 kills each for new career-bests. Schwarzenbach hit an incredible .600 (17-2-25), while Kennedy posted a .323 (17-7-31) attack percentage in the match.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon also recorded a double-figure performance as she posted 11 kills on a .250 clip, while adding eight digs.
Zayna Meyer collected 41 assists to go along with six kills, five digs, and one block.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Dylan Dela Cruz led the way with 11 digs.
The Beach started the match off strong as LBSU hit .444 in the opening set with 17 kills on 36 swings while committing just one attack error. Everything seemed to be going Long Beach State's way as they used an 8-0 run to break the game open 19-8. With a comfortable lead, the Beach cruised to a 25-16 set one victory.
The Titans seems to find their groove in the second set as they out-hit the Beach .345 to .108 in the frame. Despite the lopsided attack percentages, Long Beach State kept things close as the conference foes traded points back and forth. However, Cal State Fullerton used a 4-0 run to break a 17-all tie as the Titans led the rest of the way defeating the Beach 25-21.
With the match tied one set apiece, both teams played each other evenly matched in the third set battling through five ties. Long Beach State hit .306 with 15 kills in the set, while Cal State Fullerton knocked down 16 kills on a .316 attack percentage. The closely contested game saw the Titans squeak out a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 set lead over LBSU.
Cal State Fullerton led throughout the fourth set as the Beach trailed by as many as eight (20-12). However, Long Beach State would not quit. The Beach put together a rally and made it a two-point game (24-22), before the Titans managed to close out the set and match, 25-22.
Julia Crawford led the offensive attack for the Titans with 16 kills on a .378 attack percentage. She also added 10 digs for a double-double. Danielle Jeffries and Lolo Fonua each finished the match with 12 kills, while Nadia Koanui led the back row with 11 digs. Setter Elizabeth Schuster posted 47 assists to go along with seven digs, while Bianca Martinez led the blocking defense with three blocks, while adding eight kills.
Long Beach State will return home to the Walter Pyramid to host Hawaii on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
