LONG BEACH, Calif. –
LB Nation packed the Walter Pyramid for Long Beach State's home conference opener against Hawaii on Saturday night, but the Beach came up short in a 3-1 [20-25, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25] setback to the Rainbow Wahine.

The Beach (6-6, 1-3 Big West) played the Bows (7-5, 4-0 Big West) in a very evenly contested match in front of a crowd of 2,276 marking the largest women's volleyball turnout inside the Walter Pyramid since 2016. With fans loud and the energy running high, Long Beach and Hawaii matched each other very closely, statistically speaking, as UH led LBSU in kills (51-49), and digs (60-51), while the Beach led the Bows in aces (2-1) and blocks (10.0-6.0). The conference foes found themselves even with 46 assists each.

Zayna Meyer, the Beach's setter, piloted Long Beach State through a solid contest as she led the squad to a .316 (38-7-98) attack percentage through the first three frames and a .229 clip for the match. She distributed 40 assists, while also posting five kills on a team-leading .400 hitting percentage (5-1-10). Additionally, she contributed five digs to go along with two blocks on the defensive end.

Redshirt freshman Jaylen Jordan led the Beach's offense with a career-high 14 kills, while adding six digs, and four blocks. Junior opposite Katie Kennedy added 11 kills on a .296 clip, while redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon finished the match with 10 kills to go along with eight digs, and three blocks.

The Beach played solid defense, particularly in the final two sets as they limited Hawaii to a .111 attack percentage (18-11-63) in sets three and four. Senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz led the backrow with 15 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Savana Chacon added eight. At the net, sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon posted six blocks, while senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach registered four.

Overall, the conference foes battled each other through 23 ties and eight lead changes. The first set saw four ties, however Hawaii held the lead the whole set en route to winning, 25-20. The second set went back-and-forth, but Hawaii came out on top, 25-21.

Following the intermission between sets two and three, and an on-court ceremony celebrating former Long Beach State Women's Volleyball head coach Brian Gimmillaro, who had the locker room named in his honor earlier in the day, the Beach came out ready to fight. Long Beach State jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead after Tia Chavira's solid serving led LBSU on a 5-0 run highlighted by an ace. From there, the Beach continued to build on their lead as they hit .400 in the set (14-2-30) and led by as many as 10, before winning a convincing 25-15 game.

The fourth set saw 11 ties and six lead changes as the two teams fought each other point for point in another exciting battle. With the score tied 14-14, Hawaii managed to break through with back-to-back points to go up 16-14 over the Beach. LBSU stayed close the rest of the set, but the Bows managed to take the set, 25-19, to secure the match.

Hawaii had three double-figure scorers in Riley Wagoner (16 kills), Caylen Alexander (13 kills), and Amber Igiede (10 kills). Kate Lang finished the match with 32 assists to go along with 13 digs for a double-double. Taylo Ikenaga also recorded double-digit digs with 10, while Igiede led at the net with three blocks.

Long Beach State continues its homestand as the Beach welcome UC Santa Barbara to the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Oct. 7. First serve is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
