LONG BEACH, Calif. –
After dropping the opening set, Long Beach State went on a run taking the next three sets over UC Santa Barbara for a four-set victory [20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-22] to hand the Gauchos their first Big West Conference loss of the season and snap their six-match winning streak on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (7-6, 2-3 Big West) hit .261 in the match and limited the Gauchos (8-7, 4-1 Big West) to a .191 attack percentage, marking the lowest output by UCSB in conference action this season. Additionally, LBSU owned the edge in kills (63-48), assists (60-44), and digs (62-57).

Redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon led the LBSU offensive attack with 24 kills, just two shy of her career-high. The Crown Point, Ind., native hit .317 (24-5-60) on the night, while adding eight digs and an assist.

Chacon led a trio of Beach players in double digits as redshirt freshman outside hitter Jaylen Jordan logged a career-best 17 kills to go along with nine digs, two blocks, and as many assists. Junior opposite Katie Kennedy recorded her sixth double-digit kill performance of the year, finishing with 10 kills on a .409 clip (10-1-22).

Pacing the Beach offense was redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer who distributed 48 assists and 13 digs for a double-double – her seventh of the season. She also posted four blocks and two kills. Meyer was outstanding in the final three sets piloting LBSU to a .296 attack percentage, including a .400 clip in the final set.

In addition to the offense firing away, the Beach defense was also solid as senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz led the way with 13 digs in the back row, for her 12th double-figure dig performance of the season. Meanwhile, sophomore Savana Chacon added 10 digs to go along with three ace, which came consecutively in the second set.

At the net, sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon tied her season-high with six blocks (2 solos, 4 assists). The Beach finished the match with 8.0 blocks and 5.0 of those came in the third set as LBSU held UCSB to a .083 hitting percentage in that frame.

The contest between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara was a closely fought one throughout. Over four sets, the conference foes battled each other through 33 ties and eight lead changes.

The match began in UCSB's favor. The Gauchos and the Beach saw three early ties in the first set, but UC Santa Barbara took a 5-4 edge and held the lead the rest of the way. The Beach hit .139 in the frame to the Gauchos' .333 and despite keeping the game close, eventually fell by a score of 25-20.

Set two was more evenly matched as there were 12 ties as both teams traded points throughout. LBSU hit .250 and held UCSB to a .105 clip, but found themselves deadlocked at 17-all. With LBSU leading 20-18 after a kill from Kennedy, Savana Chacon went back to serve and went on a run. She served up three-straight aces, despite a UCSB timeout, and led the Beach to set point, 24-18, before her sister Morgan put the game away on a kill.

With the match tied 1-1, Long Beach State seemed to emerge from the locker room after intermission more energized. The Beach hit .244 in the frame and knocked down 15 kills, while the defense held UCSB to its lowest output of the night (.083). Despite the difference in hitting, the Gauchos managed to keep the game close as they stayed within striking distance. With the set tied 21-21, the Beach took advantage of a Gaucho attack error to get the sideout. Bacon came up with a huge solo block to put LBSU up 23-21 as UCSB called a timeout. The break in action did little to stop the Beach as they came back and took the third set, 25-22.

Long Beach State hit an impressive .400 in the fourth and final set. The Beach knocked down 20 kills on 40 swings, while committing just four attack errors. UC Santa Barbara managed to improve their offensive attack, hitting .281 as they force 10 ties in the frame. Although the set was close, Long Beach took control and broke a 22-22 tie on a kill from Kennedy en route to closing the set and match with three-straight kills to win 25-22.

UC Santa Barbara was led by setter Mehana Ma'a who finished with a double-double (25 assists and 10 digs), while Briana McKnight posted 14 kills on a .323 attack percentage to go along with eight digs. Tallulah Froley added 11 kills, while Macall Peed led the defense with 17 digs. At the net, Nia Correal posted six blocks.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., when the Beach host CSUN at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
